Glad to hear you say that! We're going backpacking in North Cascades in late June and ending the trip by going to San Juan Island to kayak "with" the orcas. Hoping for some close encounters!

^All amazing photos and I have nothing like that but every backcountry camping spot kicks ass to me.

San Juans a week ago. We did 7800 at the car then backpacked to 10,200 then 11,200 followed by 11,800. The 11,800 morning I woke up and my head was throbbing. The last two days and nights were endless downhills. High point was 12,600. We bailed on a summit attempt because of super short weather windows aka monsoon season.

If you like camping on your own island in the Daks with miles of sandy beach to lay on Stillwater Reservoir is the place. Free, water access only camping. Get there early after mid July.

Thanks. We like it. It’s the 179 model. Kinda wish we have the bunk beds (193) instead. Fine for now with one kid but not sure how we’re going to do it if we have a second. Having AC is a total necessity with a 1 year old for nap time. The stock extra clearance they offer is sweet.

Five nights in the Winds in August. The first and last night we had some people nearby, but night two, three, and four we were completely isolated. Which is my goal...every year when I strap on a backpack and make the slog into parts unknown. Backpacking setup is Canon 6D w/Canon 24 IS/USM

Night one. We weren't on the trail till 11:00 am and didn't make it all the way to our destination lake. Still the view was stellar!

Night 2 we were reminded why the call them the 'Winds'. Screaming wind from one direction that completely reversed direction an hour before dark. So bad ass.

Night 3 was amazing. Super isolated. Hard to get to this lake from the east or the west. No good trail. We arrived via the broken cliff band on lookers right of shot 2.

Night 4 was a sluff off day. We'd planned to go higher to another spectacular site but there was no way, and our 11 year old aussie was on his last trip. Although he loves hiking and would never, ever lay down on a trail or feign being over matched, it was obvious he needed a break and so did we. The long afternoon and evening at camp 4 proved to be perfection, the fishing ended up being spectacular and the shelter from a decent thunderstorm was appreciated. And we have a goal to come back and hit the spot we missed from a different direction.

Night 5 Cirque of the Towers is a crowded place but my wife, who used to live in Boulder and dabbled into climbing in her day at least long enough to be able to kick my ass on any wall anywhere, wanted to take it in. Glad we made the stop, even with the extra people around.

My stepson had to back out at the last minute because college registration conflicts (he changed plans mid summer due to college soccer being out with covid) and derecho power outages so we were 2 bigs and a 10 year old hauling gear to shelter 4. We still managed to cross the continental divide twice. This was the first year my daughter carried a full back. Also we loaded down our rescue dog with as much weight as possible since he is young and stupid and acted like an asshole to anyone we came upon on the trail...although he proved himself to be a hell of a backpacker...once we get him calmed down a bit he'll be fine, maybe.

    Rad Maggot Camp Spots

Nice Uglymoney, one of my favorite areas of the winds. My son and I went to a new to me area of the winds two weeks ago. Saw 3 people in 4 days despite the Covid crowds.

Thanks guys. Zion zig we were probably out about the same time. Seemed like everybody was heading out when we were heading in. This was our 4th trip to the winds and our 3rd going in deep. I think it is all my favorite once you get off the beaten feeders. We decided next time we'll do a trailhead from the Lander side. Long approach but so beautiful and that is a cool town.
