Chilling Avalanche Burial & Rescue POV Video and informative written commentary (at vimeo website) by Chappy
"Avalanche Skier POV Helmet Cam Burial & Rescue in Haines, Alaska"
"He was only buried for 4 and a half minutes which is incredibly short."
"In the time that he's buried, you can hear his breathing already accelerate. The ruffling noise back and forth is his chest rising and falling and the noise that his jacket makes. The intermittent whimpering noise you hear is him trying to swallow and get some air since the avalung wasn't fully in his mouth and instead just to the corner of his mouth." - by Chappy
"Respect Mother Nature for sure. Learn from this." - by Chappy
A Dozen More Turns - An Avalanche on Mt Nemesis in Centennial Mountains, MT by Amber Seyler (aka Chomper13 on TGR)
“The film powerfully depicts how their pursuit of powder and desire to eek out a few extra turns ends up costing one man his life, while his best friend loses a leg in the accident. Backcountry skiing, avalanches and how the "human factor" - non-scientific, emotionally-spurred miscalculations - can have dire consequences.”
"If one person is uncomfortable, that's a group decision. - by Sam Kavanaugh in A Dozen More Turns"

Sam Kavanaugh’s perspective 5 years after A Dozen More Turns
“The mountains and the solitude of the backcountry remain a passionate place for me. Few things leave me feeling more alive; yet I am all too aware of the mountain’s ability to take a life and change others in very difficult ways. Get out there and earn some fresh tracks this season, but leave the powder blinders at home. Evaluate each slope, constantly observe your surroundings, and respect nature’s power.”

When the "Forecasts" tab is open, click "Snow Level Forecasts." Really cool charts that show whether the snow level is likely to dip below the passes in the near future. ~LightRanger~ - Sorry I cannot imbed from where I am because the pages won't open - TMRF

SKI TOWN TREATS AND GRINDS (NORTH)
This post is for the secret spots you like to eat. I hate McD and the like so I'm going to start sharing my favorite places to eat and drink so perhaps it helps someone out like me. If you have a spot map it and post it. I will include it here.
RENO:
Los 4 Vientos: Awesome Mexican food. Brush up on your Spanish because English won't get you any food.
Naan and Kabab: Mediteranian food. Pretty fkn good, and if you get there between 4pm and 6pm they have a two for one special.
Ceol: Sweet laid back Irish bar. The owner is Ron from the Mt. Rose bar and he did a good job making a fun place to chill.
Nicks Greek Deli: Literally Mom & possibly another Mom. Killer food, and great portions. I recommend the Gyro plate! Is everything Greek named Nick's?
CraftA beer store and pour house with a large walk-in cooler with over a 100 beers to choose from. They usually have some good wines at the bar, plus they let you bring in your own food and have a cigar bench outsite. ~dookey67
INCLINE:
Austins, good down home cooking. ~unpossible~
Ts Mesquite Rotisserie, no description given, but I am going to guess there is some sort of BBQ element involved... ~unpossible~
IV Coffee Lab Phancee Coffee ~AKbruin~
Chuck Wagon Great breakfast burritos (made by carnies?) ~AKbruin~
NORTH LAKE TAHOE:
-King's Beach
Jasons Salad bar == YUM! ~Jim S~ <- This link is a little frigged up, and I can't fix it; but you want Jason's on the beach.
Caliente Mexican food, with that comes MARGARITAS!
Hiro Sushi Friday night all you can eat at the Sushi Bar only ~deuce~
Char Pit Good Burger, fries and milkshakes(that bring all the boyz to the yard...wait?what? we're not doing that anymore? ~deuce~
TRUCKEE:
Tacos Jalisco ~bodywhomper~
Squeeze In Gets a lot of tourists (real ones that only come up once a year and HAVE to go to this place they heard about) but the breakfast is solid. You like omelets...they like making omelets. ~deuce~
Bill's Rotisserie Bill's Rotisserie $5 tri-tip sando is a winner and so is everything else! ~gone2alpine
Pianeta "Date Nigh" Located in Old Town. Run by a husband/wife team who can usually be found behind the bar/manning the hostess station, respectively. Nouveau Truckee Italian. Request to sit "downstairs" or at the bar in lieu of upstairs. ~dookey67
Java Sushi I'm a bit of a self-proclaimed sushi snob and haven't really found any places on par with what you can get in SF or LA or NY or London, but I've become rather fond of Java, which is located next to the DMV (and next to the rotisserie that G2A mentioned). They have a solid All-You-Can-Eat menu, they smoke their own trout for sashimi and nigiri, and they have a pretty extensive vegetarian selection of rolls for those who can't get with gills and fins. ~dookey67Last edited by RaccoonFace; 09-14-2014 at 12:55 AM.

SKI TOWN TREATS AND GRINDS (SOUTH)
This post is for the secret spots you like to eat. I hate McD and the like so I'm going to start sharing my favorite places to eat and drink so perhaps it helps someone out like me. If you have a spot map it and post it. I will include it here.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE:
Artemis greek restaurant in SLT. Place has absolutley amazing food & it's Greek & not named Nick's. Try the venison burger. ~Nuthon~
*CLOSED* Burger Lounge It's all about the hangover helper. ~Nuthon~
Turn 3 Always a good local spot for a cocktail. $3.50 bloodymary's with a beer back all day sunday, every sunday of the year. All football games & Nascar if your into that. ~Nuthon~
Divided Sky in Meyers for cocktails as soon as your into town. ~Nuthon~
The Brewery Pub, pizza, wings, and beer... What else do you need? EDIT: The beer is probably better than Freshies
Freshies good California food menu and PLINY THE ELDER ON TAP - probably the best beer on tap in the entire Tahoe area (okay I don't know shit about North Lake pubs/bars). ~SchralphMacchio~
Brothers Burrito House ~bodywhomper~
Orchid Thai Solid Thai food ~deuce~
Red Hut Waffle Shop ~deuce~
Izzy's Burger Spa Good Burgers ~deuce~
Riva Grill I would add riva grill to south lake tahoe eats great views on the lake and the food is pretty good also. ~SkiCougar
Taqueria Jimenez $1 tacos. Cheapest eats downtown and actually good. Less than two blocks from the gondola. ~Spats
Sushi Pier All you can eat. Delicious, fresh, good quality fish. $3 locals discount and lunch price lasts until 3PM. Sit at the bar or service can be spotty. Very busy at peak dinner hours, so come early. ~Spats
Latin Soul Everything from huge $2 fish tacos to burritos to arepas to high-dollar South American entrees. Tasty free chips and salsa. In the basement of the Lakeside. ~Spats

Does anyone have a ski lease set up? I have a house that looks good by the Y in South Lake Tahoe with a 2 bunk bed room and two more beds (6beds) and just need more committed people to set it up for a full season.
Someone once told me that I ski like a Scandinavian angel.

I thank the all and powerful RF for setting up the thread again.
There may be an adjustment needed for grubs in Truckee. Previously Bill's was the place for a a cheap tri-tip sandwich or burrito in Truckee. Since that recommendation was made, two things have happened. Sergio, formerly of Bills has set up his own clone restaurant with the same menu over near the DMV. Technically, the place is called the Golden Rotisserie. The main signage in the mini-mall still says El Sancho. The reality is everyone I know just calls it Sergio's. The second thing is that Bill is never around at Bills anymore and the quality has gotten sketchy. Sergio is always there at Sergio's and the quality is much more reliable.Last edited by gone2alpine; 09-01-2014 at 07:49 PM. Reason: DYAC

Some north shore food shout outs:
Tahoe central market. New player in kings beach. Decent to good deli, coffee and hard cider on tap! also good selection of organic produce and, unlike Safeway, no lines :-)
Mellow fellow at the Nevada border in Brockway. A butt load of taps and also sausage (on the menu and in the crowd). Totally chill place to do your drinking and play pub games.Last edited by lepistoir; 09-03-2014 at 02:12 PM.
