But those bankers might get bloody noses from the coke rails at their hosted 3 martini lunch! What about that?
Our projects are always in the best parts of town too. Just this last month we had a running gun battle crash into a jobsite. Apparently 3 dudes knocked over a kwik mart and the owner knew the perps and gave chase. The chase crashed through the plant security gate, 6 shots fired on the project through the work area as they sped around the water treatment plant.
Had a bum in SF start stalking the women in our office in the parking lot at night. One evening our super saw this happening and beat the ever living shit out him as it was clear it was about to become a rape or murder. A few weeks later the same bum stabbed and killed a female flagger on a project a couple blocks away on the night shift. Bum was let out of jail a few months later because he was mentally unfit for trial, but apparently fine to be set loose doing the same shit again. At least the beating he took made him move his patch away from us.
I've personally been to two funerals for employees killed on the job. Too many accidents and near misses to count. Road and highway work pretty much means that some drunk knucklehead is going to come at you at 65+mph in an SUV. Underground utility marking is a crapshoot and breaking unmarked gas and high voltage electrical lines is always terrifying. But those customer calls from Graham Wellington III about 401k's must be really brutal to be like this.Wait, how can we trust this guy^^^ He's clearly not DJSapp

Got lucky last week. Our 100+ yo granite block wall along the front had a big, VERY heavy block fall off a few months ago.
The house being renovated down the street had a crew rebuilding their (similar) wall so we walked over and talked to them.
The crew and all the equipment was already here, so got the block replaced and the rest of the wall fixed for $200.
Boss man said its at least $1500 just to transport the equipment.

Here is the wall. The top right block had fallen and others were leaning out. They pulled the 4 rightmost blocks, dug out behind them, replaced them angling in toward the garden and then pushed in all the others that were sketchy. Its far from perfect, but matches what is existing and once the plants are refilled you wouldn't even be able to jotice the difference. House is 1847 and I don't imagine the wall is much newer than that, if at all.

Cool house! Makes my 1913 look like a baby. I wonder how they got those blocks in place back then, 4 guys and a lot of swearing?

What I wonder more about is how they got in the 4' high ones that make up my foundation. Especially since they didn't have trucks and there aren't many quarries nearby. Seriously cool. Maybe aliens..
Guy who fixed the wall asked the same question and brought up the pyramids, but afaik massive slave labor wasn't really a thing in late 19th century here in Mass..
One of many reasons I love owning this house, and totally stoked I got my wall repaired for a bargain!
Also fwiw that huge Azelia in the front is AWESOME in the spring. Going to have to post another one to add the pic..

I spent 20 years on my local Fire Department a lot of our responses were on a interstate, soooo many close calls, several apparatus struck, state troopers vehicles hit, cars our patients were in struck, one time a runaway utility trailer full of furniture got loose and slammed into the back of the Aid Car, a firefighter had to jump into the cab of the Engine right before a vehicle hit it right where he was standing, another time a cop on scene yelled “RUN” and we did and the car our patients were sitting in got hit, I have more, I’ve thrown lit flares at assholes who didn’t slow down even when the scene was lit up like Christmas, I have a special hate for Fucking assholes who can’t slow down for a few moments when emergency workers are on the roadway. When you are actually fighting a vehicle fire you can’t hardly see and hear what’s going on outside of your work zone. Highways are Fucking dangerous shit and there was a couple times I can say I was truly scared and I have done jobs that had some risks associated with them ie a Union Ironworker and a United States Marine

I always thought it best to respect the stresses and trials of others and never, ever expect reciprocity in kind.

Hold on here. This is super fucking disingenuous. The conversation flow:
General: Damn, sure sucks that some contractors can’t keep a schedule and communicate. Wish they would.
Contractors: Bidding sucks and scheduling is hard.
General (and me): Bidding is part of the job, and you aren’t the only ones who have to keep a schedule and communicate in the face of unknowns and unforeseen events and complexity.
Contractors: I don’t think anybody understands how hard this administrative and project management shit is. Plus customers can be mean.
Me: Stop whining. All the administrative and project management shit you describe is standard to many many jobs, and you don’t have a monopoly on mean customers. And I work in banking, where they literally make jokes about how easy it is. It being hard isn’t an excuse to not keep a schedule and/or communicate.
Contractors: (Death and dismemberment) (PTSD) (hard physical labor) (near death experiences)
Seriously. Shut. The. Fuck. Up.
I didn’t say my job was as hard or as dangerous as yours or that your dicks weren’t way bigger than mine. I’m just saying you don’t have any excuse not to keep a fucking schedule and communicate with your customers. And if you can’t fucking hack it there are plenty of open posted positions in other sectors.
By all means, regale us with tales of danger and death and sadness. Honestly, I get all that and I didn’t choose construction for a lot of those reasons. BUT don’t act like those things were a part of the comparison being made. Fuck off with that trump card bullshit.focus.

But we can all agree that doctors think that they are better than anyone and are never on schedule and never have the office manager call to tell you that your one o'clock appointment is going to be 3 at the earliest.

But don’t you realize the pressure they’re under? It took decades of schooling while living in squalor to now hold the power of life and death in their hands. People die on their table! Plus lawsuits! These fucking contractor sissies have no idea….
Yeah, fuck lawyers.focus.

Also, from observation, most job site danger is self inflicted.
"get on that shaky ladder you pussy" - dude falls
"Safety glasses, pfffttt" - cue grinder wheel breaking into someone's face
"It's fine (referring to terrible boards on 2nd or 3rd story for ingress/egress to working areas)" - more falls
The amount of shit I got on a commercial crew for always wearing my safety glasses when grinding and harness when 20+ feet up was not small. My paranoia was validated when I went into WC reporting and saw the amount of stupid, avoidable accidents fucking up construction workers.
