How to keep your kid from being an entitled little shit…...
some good quotes below from the article…i know lots of you were in this system….time for a reboot and reload.
"Our system of elite education manufactures young people who are smart and talented and driven, yes, but also anxious, timid, and lost, with little intellectual curiosity and a stunted sense of purpose: trapped in a bubble of privilege, heading meekly in the same direction, great at what they’re doing but with no idea why they’re doing it."
"At least the classes at elite schools are academically rigorous, demanding on their own terms, no?……. but professors and students have largely entered into what one observer called a “nonaggression pact.” Students are regarded by the institution as “customers,” people to be pandered to instead of challenged. Professors are rewarded for research, so they want to spend as little time on their classes as they can. The profession’s whole incentive structure is biased against teaching, and the more prestigious the school, the stronger the bias is likely to be. The result is higher marks for shoddier work.
"The irony is that elite students are told that they can be whatever they want, but most of them end up choosing to be one of a few very similar things. "

^^^^except, that is not the point BMILLS….. there is actually too much emphasis on winning, rather than the content of the win. Bunch of "winning" douchbags with no substance, except their own high fives to each other….mediocrity of high priced ed?

If you are an entitled little shit, your kid will be too. If you've learned to be a responsible adult, you will naturally fail to tolerate your kids being entitled little shits. There's no trick.

There is some great stuff in there not about the entitled little Shit syndrome but about the problems with our university system writ large, not just ivy league. " College is not the only chance to learn to think, but it is the best. One thing is certain: If you haven’t started by the time you finish your B.A., there’s little likelihood you’ll do it later. That is why an undergraduate experience devoted exclusively to career preparation is four years largely wasted." great one. Pains me to see the death of the classical Renaissance education.

If you actually have values beyond the material, you will teach them to your kids. If you don't have them, or don't act on them, don't be surprised if you end up with a materialistic little dick or bitch who wants to go to the Ivy League so they can get rich.
All of which comes back to the only piece of parenting advice that matters: spend time with your kids, lots of it.
The article, which has next to nothing to do with the above, or with DasCunt's title, is a good one. As the recipient of a traditional liberal arts education from a third tier school, I agree wholeheartedly. I'm encouraging my kid to evaluate colleges exactly along the lines the author recommends.

Good god, that guy writes like an asshole. Some of his points were valid, but wading through his pretentious phrasing and self-aggrandizing word choices made it pretty much impossible to read. Likely the product of an Ivy with everyone wrong with him that Dersiewicz (sp?) pointed out.

To add to the 'universities being broken' chord, couple days ago a letter came in the mail about UDel (mom went there) donations. It said during the 2013-2014 academic year they totaled $63.9 million in donations. Holy fuck, I found that surprising. Makes me wonder where all the rest of the money goes from tuition. What a sham.

I think there is some interesting parallels to be drawn between the relationship of modern knowledge development and the financial /industrial complex and the Catholic Church's repression of scientific advancement between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance in Europe .

GF's son said, "This isn't the '70's, you need to buy me a car." Smart kid but lazy like his Dad. Said working at McDonald's was "beneath him." Was going to join the military until they wouldn't give him the job he wanted. She kicked his ass out. Parents said she was heartless. Their kids all have cars they bought them. Now he's busing tables. Lolz.
