On August 23rd EastCoastPDR and I took a recon mission up to Dunderberg to scout ski conditions and find some September ski possibilities.
EastCoastPDR checking out Jack's Glacier:
This was the smallest I have ever seen Jack's Glacier. The snow appeared to be mostly craptastic with an abrupt (not happy) ending. We would pass on this for now and check out Hidden Glacier next.
Vets looks at the abundant rockfall combined with mudslides on Hidden Glacier:
Maybe the Heart Patch would have better snow.

Looking back at the Heart Patch:
The top half of the Heart Patch felt great with a few inches of slurpy-like snow, possibly leftover from previous precipitation. The bottom half was more like iceyness combined with refrozen coral reef. At least we were half right about finding better snow here.
We took another look at Jack's Glacier on the hike back out:
However, we decided to save it for another day.

You might need to haul in a generator and a snow-cone machine into the hills for your Sept Turns

...Ski You in September...
On September 1st EastCoastPDR and I returned to Dunderberg.
EastCoastPDR approaches the "Drivewayberg Patch":
This patch is usually about 3 football fields long. On this day it was about the size of a 2 and a half car garage's driveway.
Vets:
EastCoastPDR:
EastCoastPDR skied his 12th consecutive month. His first time skiing year-round.
Vets skied his 131st consecutive month.

Dunderberg on October 5, 2014
I returned to the location of September turns. While this patch had gotten smaller, it did receive a some fresh snow a week earlier. I enjoyed last season's leftovers mixed with our new season's fresher leftovers.

Carson Pass on October 26th.
After getting beta from EastCoastPDR's recon ski mission the previous day, Powdrhound and I made a morning ski mission to Carson Pass.
Vets get ready to "thread the needle" between two small boulders:
Powdrhound continues down after "threading the needle" between the small boulders...
...then skis the off-piste next to the relatively icy groomed by tires...
...nearing the bottom of our first run...
Powdrhound heads back up for more:

Powdrhound stays on skier's right where the snow is relatively deeper:
He also blasts by the rock face:
It felt good to ski again.
Powdrhound is now up to month 60 on his consecutive month streak.

I sure hope you are right. I have a window to go up this weekend and need to set some things up at the cabin. Sure would be nice if I can get some turns in.
And that shear rock face looks like it has a nice pillow line down the lookers left side. Someone needs to slay it.

Thanks for the reminder, Sal. I have to dig around and find where I stashed the cordite over the summer.
Who wants to practice with beacons and talk about safer decisions in avy terrain? I'm thinking good way to deal with Halloween hangover on Saturday or Sunday on Donner summit or Brockway.Even sometimes when I'm snowboarding I'm like "Hey I'm snowboarding! Because I suck dick, I'm snowboarding!" --Dan Savage
