That was awesome. Well worth the time.

Every man has the opportunity to reach their own enlightenment. Asking yourself the hard questions and diverging from the 'standard' are sometimes the best ways to find you and what makes you happy. Very cool story and a reminder to smile more often than not, for you, but also for others. It's cool to see him make others smile.
"Do what you want to."

I was riding the trails last night and was getting that feeling you get when you're one with the bike/trail/body and I thought of Slomo. I wondered if he gets that feeling all the time and that's what he's talking about- that he's found a simple way to feel that all the time. Sure looks like he gets that shit eating grin on his face that we equate with that feeling.

Yeah I think that feeling's pretty much what he's all about.

It's pretty easy to retire and do what you want at that age if you were a successful Physician.

I always thought a Slomo was a Mormon missionary with a flat tire on his bike.
I like this Slomo a whole lot better.

This. Fucking hell. Is rollerblading the secret to life? Or is the secret to life amassing a seven figure fortune and deciding you're just going to do whatever you feel like doing from now on? I'd be way happier and less stressed out if my days consisted of less screwing around with computer networks and more taking the family skiing, golfing, and to baseball games.

IME physicians of that vintage are usually still working, they are habituated to working to being on the asshole track as Slo mo would put it, sure its easy to retire its just that its not that easy to retire

I think that is the most salient point, that he was able to make the decision to retire at a reasonable age, not that he skates on the boardwalk everyday. He could just as easily be skiing, biking or golfing. A lot of physicians I works with would benefit from this but their whole identity is tied up in being a doctor.

exactly, the 1'st thing people ask when you meet them at a party is "what do you do?" but suddenly you are no longer on the ball
I stopped calling it retirement and I call it reinvention, you got enough money time to do whatever but you don't really need to do anything so while its not hard to live it can be hard to know what to do ... Slomo has sucessfully reinvented himselfLee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

You don't get any sympathy either
IME the people who can't retire cuz they haven't done the time will tell you they know how and the people who have done the time don't wana/ don't know what to do
at the end of the day Slo mo buddy is just doing an outdoor job that doesn't pay at all but at least the weather is nice, skiing everyday is just a cold outdoor jobLee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

W=Fs
you can think of the ski/bike/paddle as play but its really work, its easier to get out if ya got play mates but they all gotta work SO call it work and get out there if thats what gets you out there
beats sitting in front of this screen with nothing to do but take shots at dentists and critique Hugh Conways latest rant
gotta go to work ... the bike is callingLee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know
