Trek demo trailer stolen in California, found empty and on fire

FOLSOM, Calif. (BRAIN) — A Trek demo trailer containing 36 high-end bikes was stolen from behind a California shop last week and was later found missing the bikes and on fire alongside a high miles away.

And I hope these assholes get it in spades!
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

What with people not liking Trek?
You could say something like "I just test road a Trek," and someone will always reply "ugh, Trek. Yeah I think I had one of those once. It was some pos that was my first bike."
They seem nice. I've ridden a few that are.
Their custom shock and fork offset could get annoying though, I guess.

Are you implying that there's a relationship between cost, and how often an item is stolen?
I'd argue it has more to do with whether or not it is insured.
Car theft is the most reported crime in America.
Fuck, car stereo theft is a big thing, especially aftermarket radios. You think those things are worth much?

We're not talking museum artwork here.

I wish someone would steal my bikes. Could really use the insurance money to upgrade right about now.

Yeah, but resale value sucks. Makes for good buys for anyone who's not a dentist, though.

Anyway, not real surprising that a trailer with $100,000+ worth (probably more like $150k) of bikes gets jacked. Brand labels slathered everywhere and everyone knows what's inside - kind of asking for trouble. I get that a company has to have a way to bring their product all around, and they want to be advertising as they go, but might some modest discretion help avoid these fiascos?

What does one do with the product? Stealing bikes direct from a company is like stealing marked bills from a bank.

I was thinking the same, even parted out would leave a trail back to the thieves ...

wouldnt want to get caught on one of these bike ...

if these bikes are as high end as I think there could be upwards of half a million worth of trailer and bikes ...

seems a bit irrisponsible to leave a trailer full of bikes that can be towed away eh?

sled trailer are getting stollen all the time around revestoke, but some guys prevent their trailers getting stolen by immobilizing it. a little bit of damage is far better than losing it all.

Do car stereos still get stolen? Back when CD players were new, and cassette decks were standard, it seemed like all the aftermarket ones had removable faceplates or the entire unit slid out of the dash. But they also cost a bunch of $$$, and back in 1990 or whatever, $500 was a lot more than it is today. Now you can buy a CD/MP3 single-DIN stereo for $75.

Um…wheel booot or hitch lock? WTF were they thinking? Would’ve prevented the whole thing for a few bucks.

In other WTF-edness: setting the abandoned trailer on fire?!? That is some whack-ass shit.

Making sweeping assumptions, but tweaking addicts aren't typically given to rational thought. Probably thought they could get him through DNA or something.

Two or three years ago a few guys here in Salt Lake City set up a meet to buy a stolen bike and came equipped to jump the guy who promptly pulled a nine millimeter on them. One of my kids is a college student and had one of his friends have a knife pulled on him while confronting a guy stealing a bike on their campus. Dying over a bike is not rational.

Spoke with a shop employee yesterday. There were three 10k+ bikes right at the front by the counter and they didn't take those ones.

That was the third time the shop has been hit this year. wtf. People suck.

The epidemic of stolen high end bikes is real. Seems like once or twice a week I see a friend share a post of someone getting their high end MTB jacked off the back of their truck or out of their garage. Where are all these bikes going? Is there some underground market that we don't know about that is parting out 5k MTBs? Are they being stuffed in some garage until some tweaker spray paints it and sells it to their other tweaker friends from 1/8th the real cost? Do the people who steal these bikes know exactly what they are and just mix and match parts to sell them on Pinkbike?

I'm sure it's some combo of all the above... but I've never been more scared to keep my bike on the back of my car, even locked with a chain and a cable.
