Oregon: Water Supply to Be Discarded Over Urine in Reservoir

Portland will flush millions of gallons of treated water because a 19-year-old was caught urinating Wednesday into an open reservoir. David Shaff, the Water Bureau administrator, said 38 million gallons would be discarded. Two years ago, the city drained a reservoir in a similar situation. The urine poses little health risk, but city officials do not want customers to think the water is tainted.

Real issue though is not the little pee (in an open air reservoir of 38 million gallons of water with plenty of animal life in it) that necessitates the draining, but rather the city is facing a lot of local backlash over the need to cover these reservoirs, arguably for federal gov't compliance, at a huge expense and so the city is using this as a public way to say, "see, we need to do cover these, to keep people safe from icky pee"

Urine is not always sterile. There can be bacteria, yeasts, and other nasties living in it. Regardless it is stupid to drain the reservoir when there are so many californians that would love to drink pee.

Curious about what EPA reg they're failing - covered water storage is far from the norm... Unless getting algae or other sunlight induced issues (which have other mitigation methods) covering is bizarre.

Huh interesting, didn't know that. Looks like it's a start before doing more research. I guess then the question is does the benefit of reduced dental issues outweigh the reduced brain function?
