Markleeville. Most everything but the ocean. Have not been in summer and I gather it is a bit of a shit show, but pretty easy to escape.

Hood River, OR. Great windsurfing, mt biking and skiing, besides being just plain gorgeous. Climate's nice, too and not far from the metropolis of Portland for city life.

San Francisco for big city choice... Fairfax or San Anselmo would be cool.

I agree that somewhere around Tahoe would be great. The NV side might be more affordable, but you get what you pay for.

I moved to the roaring fork valley so I wouldn't have to answer that question any more. An hour to the desert, 20 minutes to skiing, an airport... And the summers are awesome here.

Seems like it depends a lot on making a living...There are a lot of places that work really well if you have a lot of money and free time...but not at all if you have to work all the time and don't have much disposable income.

Having a nice plot of land near Glacier, WA would be pretty hard to beat for me. I don't really like sun that much and I hate the heat. YMMV.

Tahoe seems nearly ideal for me:

-great weather with many sunny days (few gloomy days)
-huge dumps in the winter (past 2 horrid years excluded)
-great mountain and road biking
-Lake Tahoe for water sports
-Truckee river
-decent infrastructure albeit a few of the villages are a bit dumpy(c/w Jackson, Deer Valley, Aspen etc)

only thing missing are salt water waves

I'm liking the Bend area. Excellent resort and BC skiing, great MTB trails and lots of rivers/lakes for paddling. You can get to salt water in ~3.5 hours. Area is large enough to have reasonable employment opportunities outside of the hospitality sector. Home prices are very reasonable. And teh Womenz outnumber men.

I'm a big fan of the CO mountain towns- Breckenridge, Aspen, Steamboat, Telluride, CB. They all have their pros & cons. Reasons why I like living in Breck:

-7 ski areas within an hour with a long, lift-served season. Good snow quality preservation due to high altitude. Surrounding backcountry options are vast and numerous.
-Excellent mountain biking
-Whitewater kayaking/rafting on dozens of runs from Class II - V within 2 hours.
-Lake Dillon & Green Mountain Reservoir (flatwater kayaking, sailing, water skiing, etc)
-Easy access to Denver, DIA and Red Rocks
-Good schools
-Picturesque, historic downtown core.
-3 hours to the desert.

Telluride. Why? Everything about the place is jaw dropping.
The average home price of $980K is a bit of a detriment though…

Maybe not compared to Cleveland, Pittsburg, Las Vegas or anywhere else nobody wants to live, but damn reasonable compared to any metro area on the west coast.

If surfing/ocean wasn't a priority, bend might be my go-to. Loved it there.
