Did the same. Bought one RTIC 45 2 weeks ago, just ordered another. The 65 is just too unwieldy. Quality is spot on.
I put one single bag of ice in the RTIC on Sunday and threw the Cooler in the garage, Thursday night it was just about all melted, just drained it Friday at lunch and it's ice cold water still. That's pretty damn good.

ORCA 40 loaded and we are heading to the Winds. It just has to keep my beer cold till Sunday morning. After that it is whiskey, vodka and dehydrated food.

My wife just gave me a Yeti 65 for our anniversary this week. But I can get a RTIC 65 and 45 for the same as she spent on the Yeti. Seems like a no brainer to me.
Has anyone tried out the soft side RTIC lunch box? It's sold out now, but looks perfect for keeping a sixer cold in the car for after rides or a couple hours on the river.

Orca 40 sat in the back of my car at the Elkhart trailhead in the Winds since last Saturday. Added ice then car camped Sat night then backpacked out Sunday am. Now Friday, we came out to ice cold beer and ice still in cooler. 6 days even (edit to add lots of ice left on day 7). We didn't pack it to the brim with ice or anything crazy. I do have tinted windows and I put a shade on the windshield. Good enough for me. Worth every penny. Off to the Wind River brewery for beers and burgers!

RTIC coolers are 20% off right now.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Does anyone make a cooler that has 1/2 the ice retention (say, three days) but has WAY more room inside than the super insulated ones?
I don't wanna give up that much real estate. Are the igloo ones crap?

Yeti vs other super-heavily-insulated coolers
I have this one and it’s a kickass cooler. I use it more than my rotomold due to much more capacity and not as heavy.

Toss a couple bags of ice in it to pre cool it a couple days before you go. Dump them out then load it up with you food/beverage and ice the day you leave. Mine keeps ice for over a week. I also freeze gallon jugs of water. Not a big fan of bag ice.

I got a hudge coleman and I can fit a 5 gallon keg in it. Great for the desert, although it is technically illegal to take a keg to UT.

I have the Coleman 70 qt recommended in this wirecutter review. It's worked great so far, but I've only used it for 3-day weekends (albeit 3 day weekends in the desert).

Just got a RTIC 20 - was cheap enough that I thought I’d try one.
Dumbest purchase in awhile. These super insulated coolers just make no sense in smaller sizes - the weight and external size is enormous for how much internal space there is. And by the time you put ice in it there’s barely enough room for lunch and beverage - certainly can’t get enough of anything in there thats going to warrant 5+ days of cooling.

^ Try loading the big rotomold coolers than trying to move them...

I love my RTIC 45, but you are so right... By the time I load the 45 with all my drinks and than the ice you better be fairly strong to carry the sum a biatch...! If you just need to move it here or there no big deal... But if you need to move it a lot when loaded you better have a strong back... I did get an RTIC and Yeti soft side so we load these and keep the hard side stationary when at the lake or are mobile...
To no surprise I just got a Yeti notice letting me know they kownhave coolers with wheels...

I have a Yeti 50 because that’s as big as I need for current duties, and I can still carry it on my own when it’s full. I wouldn’t buy a smaller rotomolded cooler. Smaller than that and you’re in soft-sided territory IMO. And they’ve gotten a lot better in recent years.
I do have a small Galaxy lunch-sized rotomolded cooler that I got when I joined the Grand Canyon Private Boaters Assoc in 2010. It’s nice, but it doesn’t keep ice all that long because the walls are thin, and it’s not tall enough to fit 16oz cans or bottles standing up. I use it a lot for afternoon rides, but the Dakine soft side cooler I got this summer is a lot more practical.

Yeah, the 45’s are manageable but once you get to the 65 and up, not so much.

I picked up a nIce brand one off of STP a while back and it's been great. I think I paid $150 for a 60.

Got the Igloo 70qt, and couldn't be happier. Kept a block of ice...icy? For more than five days in Moab (granted, it was in the 60's). Perfect balance of price, real estate, and insulation for me.

Pulled the trigger on an rtic w/ their sale this weekend
question for the more-knowledgeable-than-me:
I’ve liked the freeze-a-gallon-water-container as a reasonably reliable method for my coolers, but the cheap plastic gallon jugs tend to not make it thru many freeze/thaw cycles before getting pinhole leaks
i’d like to find a silicone box to make a big ice cube...if such a thing existed
maybe a cambro? (supposed to be freeze proof, food safe & seems cheap)
what are you using?

while i poo pooed the idea of a seat on the sup
cause it aint a sdpb
and while their getting stronger my feet having to make continues micro balance adjustments take a beating after 4 hour and sitting down vrs. kneeling to take a break or retie a fly is nice
the mrs. used our rei rebate on a yeti 45
i wanted seafoam but corals not bad
it actually rides pretty damn well and isnt a bad solo portage
i only use frozen gaterades and nalgenes never loose ice so it stores dry gear in the top safely so far anyway
i wish i had freezer space to chill a large container like that one"When the child was a child it waited patiently for the first snow and it still does"- Van "The Man" Morrison
