edit: I see Ken Dryden went to McGill, so fuck that place. Although you have to give them some credit for William Shatner I guess.

The UCL degree looks much broader than most UK undergraduate programmes so it's a little hard for me to judge it comparative to other degrees here. It does look like a very interesting programme though, with a lot of potential for intellectual growth as well as the chance to develop skills (languages) that would assist his employability. Bearing that in mind...

Does he know what he wants to do for work yet? Or where? And is the objective of the degree to make him more employable or to generally extend his education and give him time to grow up? If it is the former I would think UCL makes more sense; there are a lot of good graduates who can't get jobs right now so I'd be concerned about getting the absolute best degree I can to be more employable.

If he's likely to want to go into a European graduate scheme then UCL would be a good place to be as they will be on the circuit for milkround recruiters and should be geared up to assisting undergrads with their applications, networking events etc. Plus it'll be a more recognisable qualification to a London-based recruiter and London would be an easier place to get a relevant internship. Obviously the opposite would be true if he wants to work in Canada. And I don't know how French recruiters view English degrees - maybe you know better?

There's lots to dislike about London but it is also a great city. I expect if he comes here with a positive attitude he'll have a load of fun. That said, I didn't like the idea of a big city university because I thought I'd be likely to wash up here eventually anyway and wanted to experience life elsewhere. And living independently away from home for the first time in a big city isn't necessarily for everyone.

I did a 4-year undergraduate course at a Scottish university that resulted in an MA as a first degree. I know your son will be overseas anyway, but I had the chance to spend a year abroad in Grenoble and the experience of a different country's university culture was very valuable (as well as a 120+ day winter I found the studying abroad awesome and employers have been very positive about it too).

I can't give you any answers as you/he need to work out a decision. But if you have any questions about life in London I'd be happy to help.

For undergrad he played for Big Red and won a championship in 1967. He was unbelievable, winning 76 of 81 games. He's pretty much a God there.

Sad thing is, Bruins had him, but traded for some lame picks.

Back on topic... PR's son should definitely bone up on his Star Trek episodes.

Montreal is one of my favorite towns. If he's heterosexual he will love it there... hottest women in N. America IMHO. Fun bar area near the University as well.

Thank you Mulletizer. Very helpful input.
(I don't think he will seek employment in 3 years.)

, one year abroad (Spain for him), great staff/student ratio...
On the other hand, he doesn't like London so much, while he did enjoy Montreal very much (in the summer...). He also think he would enjoy the north american "campus experience" more than the euro "urban university" vibe of UCL. (we did visit both uni). So, he's actualy leaning heavily towards McGill, on extra academic criteria.

    Other factors to consider :
we would foot the bill and McGill is much cheaper for us (french citizens pay the Quebec rate of tution / UCL is expensive and London even more so)
He can get his degree in 3 years in McGill, since his french Baccalauréat is good for 30 credits/120.
The ESPS degree is 4 years (3 years in London + 1 year in Spain.)
    .?
I seem to remember hearing that Spain was on the cheaper side for tuition?

The year abroad in Spain is part of the program, year 3 / 4. (He could have been in Germany, Italy, sweden, France, Russia…and a bunch of other european countries. And chose Spain since he's rather fluent in Spanish.) UCL doesn't give you a discount unfortunately…

Edit : Ok, BigDaddy, Iceman, now I get it. You're talking hockey, right ? Do I need to start following hockey if my son is in Montreal ?

I know very little about UCL but McGill has some real benefits.

Montreal is a fun city but expensive (maybe not as expensive as London). The women are outrageously beautiful and I'm saying that from Southern California. The city is full of fantastic food and bars. Great cycling community if he is into the outdoors.

Academics at McGill vs UCL/LBS (I'm not sure how much they coordinate at the undergrad level):

If he wants to study strategy, one of the (formerly) top scholars in the world (Mintzberg) is at McGill but I'm not sure how much if any he teaches or influences the undergrad BA. McGill has name recognition in the US and with decent grades will likely set him up for a good choice of top 50 (globally) grad schools.

LBS is one of the absolute best business schools in the world. Right up there with Harvard, Wharton, Booth, Stanford, INSEAD, Columbia, MIT. If he does well there, he begins to write his ticket. Again I don't know exactly how much UCL ties in with LBS but I know they are fairly tight.

Given that they are both top schools with good name recognition and in very metropolitan areas, I'd tell him to choose based on the best atmosphere for HIM to excel.

Dryden was at McGill Law in the early 70s when I was an undergrad there. I saw him playing shinny hockey one time but like Ice says fuck him et les Habitants aussi.

McGill for $5000 is a true steal indeed. That's about what I paid back in the day. Despite the fact that they gave me a degree their reputation has held up remarkably well and the Poli-Sci department probably still has enough commies in it to keep a left leaning young French man entertained.
Damn, we're in a tight spot!

One of my few (and insignificant) claims to fame is that I lived next door to the dorm room that many years before the Negotiator occupied when he was taking up space on campus.
