sleeper (non cop magnets) AWD cars??????????
Should probably just chill out and be happy with my pickup, but missing the trip times I could make in a fast car.
What's out there that won't have the highway patrol humping your leg, but will absolutely smoke?
Ford SHO seems not too bad, but think it has a shit awd system?
Was planning on waiting for more AMG wagons to hit the used market, and go that way. Then got a wild hair and started looking at stuff like the R8 and GTR. Figure the R8 is a trouble magnet, not sure on the GTR?
Pontiac has the rebadged opel thingy, but it doesn't have much of a motor.
Used Mercedes are worth a dime on the dollar, so maybe a sedan or coupe?
How good is the 4matic system? How good is Nissan's system?
Want to corner good, but something that would feel comfy at 120 would trump a light weight little corner car.

Chipped Audi S6 or S4 Avants, depending how big you want them. Buy used, take off the badges.

How much do you want to spend?
Anything AMG is off the hook expensive to maintain. Don't even ask. Even the rich guys I know dumped their AMG's due to high maintenance costs.
Other than 2014 AMG Mercedes, 4matic vehicles are fairly pedestrian that error on the strong side of luxury.
Buddy at work has Audi S6 Sport coupe. The interior feels very cheap. Junk imo.
A CL550 4matic is a nice vehicle but it does not have roof rack attachments like the S550.

Supposedly you can fit the 390 ram air from the AMX in there.

I drove both the 550 and 350 4Matic wagons when we were car shopping several years ago. The performance difference was minimal, read: both are slow as fuck due to the hudge weight of the car. Sure I bought the 350 because the wife wanted a Benz (and she was paying) but damn it's boring.
If you're looking for an AWD station wagon that's got some git don't get either one of those. The previously mentioned Audi S series Avant Quattros, BMW 5 or 3 series Xdrive wagons, or even the Caddy CTS Sportwagon have far more oomph than my 350 4matic for the similar $$$. Shit, the fastest wagon I ever drove was a Dodge Magnum SW but it wasn't AWD.

There was never an E550 wagon. 2006 was the last year for the E500 wagon and it is 1.3 seconds faster 0-60 than E350:
2006 Mercedes-Benz E500 Sedan 0-60 mph 5.2./Mercedes E350 0-60 mph 6.5
2008 BMW 550i 0-60 mph 5.1
2007 Mercedes E550 0-60 mph 4.7 Quarter mile 13.2.
2010 Mercedes E550 E 4MATIC Sedan 0-60 mph 4.7 Quarter Mile 13.2Last edited by 4matic; 03-20-2014 at 07:01 PM.

AMG are reliable. It's standard maintenance. They are very stiff vehicles too.
Standard brake job on an AMG will 3-4X that of standard mercedes. Rotors are 5X the cost. Four wheel brake job at dealer will be $5k.
Top three cars to maintain from Bankrate.com:
1. Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series
2. Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG
3. Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG

Used to have an ML500 that I absolutely loved. Pretty sure they made those in AWD. That thing was a rocket, in egg form. They are pretty stealthy now, because they look older. Man I loved driving that thing. So fast, and so nimble. Pretty decent on the gas too, for a 5 Liter V8. Not a very heavy SUV/Car/EGG

I don't see too many sleepers being mentioned here. Can't you order a Suby with all the go-fast bits but not the go-fast/boy-racer looks?
How about a land cruiser with a TRD supercharger add-on?

5 speed forester xt from like 06ish. A grand worth of mods to the plumbing, computer, and tweaking the suspension will have you getting places as quickly as you'd care for without arousing the suspicions of the fuzz. I'll gladly admit that it won't be as sexy as a v8 Merc but a v8 Merc ain't exactly my definition of a sleeper.
Edit: Didn't notice your content about the 100k midlife crisis car. A used forester would be the antithesis of that.
