6.8 Quake off the coast of Eureka, CA

    http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...182046#summary

Some scientist are saying this could be the precursor to a mega quake on the Cascadia Subduction Fault which, by records, is due for a big one.
Anybody on here feel this one?

Didn't feel it here (East Bay), but that's a serious fault line. Like Fukushima-style.

Edit: You got a link to where the seismologists are saying that?

If my memory from Structural Geology class is correct, I think the JDF plate is one of the deepest subduction zones on the planet in terms of its interaction with the N. American plate but also has transform and divergent relations with other plates on different boundaries. It almost serves as a "keystone" amongst surrounding plates.

If and when that thing pops the results will be catastrophic...fer sure.

Ya I felt that last night. It was the biggest I've felt since I've been in arcata, but I would have thought 6.9 would have been worse. No damage, but shook the glasses in the kitchen pretty good. Came from the same zone that most do around here. About 50 miles offshore from ferndale, ca.

Interesting you where that close with so little shaking. I have been through a few over the in southern California, and it all depends on where the energy is focused. The Northridge quake shook is moderately, but kicked ass in the next town. Even in Fillmore the edges did fine but a line through the center had a lot of damage.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I heard that people in Eureka had some door trim separated and other minor things, so what you're saying is probably spot on. We are a little north of Ferndale, CA. I follow a link on twitter that updates all earthquakes in the world over a certain magnitude, and I've been waiting for this to happen. The earthquake twitter thingy was spot on and even told me there was no tsunami danger for out area. That was cool because I live way into the tsunami danger zone.
