why would there be fines if everyone is stopped and actually have what the law requires?

Those checkpoints are not far enough up the hill. IMO you'd need to have the checkpoint at Dumont/Downieville before Hwy 40 splits off. Doubt that 285 would even be on their radar for such enforcement...

That location doesn't give enough length for trucks to get up to speed before hitting the steep curve on i70 and 285. It would have to located a ways back into golden and Lakewood to be acceptable. Then that puts you behind various on ramps. That means each of those access roads needs their own check point. We are adding major cost and complexity at that point.

I had similar thought with the 70 checkpoint. Put it in Golden/Lakewood and everybody heads up the canyon instead (or just gets onto highway at/past dino lots). No way Idaho Springs is going to let it happen in their town - even if they build another eastbound lane. Really nowhere to put it that would be effective (other than perhaps US40 exchange as previously mentioned) and by that time the roads have already become a complete cluster so effect would be minimal.

I've seen it. Can't remember if it was year before last... or longer ago than that. Was surprised, being that CO9 seemed like an odd choice to enforce such a thing, as opposed to just closing it.

If the fines for violators were extreme, that would put a stop to it too. Accident or stuck without AWD/Snows/Chains....10k. Commercial truck....25k.

Stoked. Gonna try to leave late. Will have 5 people in my damn CRV and will bring plenty of beer to keep entertained in case it fucking explodes up Georgetown hill. I guess the bonus is I get to flex on the peeps in the carpool/pay parking at the basin. Oh well. Hope my liver will keep up with all the runs I don't take.

You already know the answer to this problem.

And it isn't people putting their phones away - they'll never do that.
