cdot has a command center with hundreds of traffic camera displays lots of people lounging about getting paid
monday traffic is jacked at the silverthorne exit multi mililon dollar electronic signs over the highway
no one in traffic command center looked up from their facebook feed long enough to see it and post on the over head sign "traffic stopped ahead slower speeds advised?"
then yesterday morning same shit heading west on vail pass? what are those huge message boards for?

Maybe they'll start having real-time closure announcements for the highway. Seems like this is a real issue where it takes them an hour or more to tell people about a closure if they tell them at all. Krystal has better traffic info than CDOT and CDOT/CSP are the ones who are in control of the road closure.

I-70 closed again last night after a semi caught fire and burned coming down from the tunnel to Silverthorne.

Why downshift when you can just ride the brakes and light the truck on fire?

I know there's a lot of newb truckers on the road right now, but do they even teach em the basics? I feel like they just throw the keys at em and say "welp, get out there!"

Read the article about the guy just found guilty of killing and injuring people in 2019. The court testimony sounded exactly like here are the keys try not to die out there. Dispensable people running cargo around sounds great right?

Seems like low hanging fruit to have a gps devise in trucks that would tell the driver what gear they should be in and if theyíre going too fast.

Or have a brake temperature sensor, similar the TPMS most cars have these days.

It’s a little late at that point most often. Maybe it just alerts driver to gtfo.
If you’re not down shifting the first half, I hold little hope on the second half.

I'm no truck driver but I'm pretty sure they'll need to be geared down to begin with and down-shifting isn't an option once they've fucked up in the first place but holy fuck do they not cover "big ass hills in a heavy ass truck" in truck driving school?

Not to mention the "trucks use lower gear" signs that already exist.

Thatís where GPS comes in - itíll tell you thereís an 8% grade coming up, and hereís what you need to be doing now to be ready for it. Doesnít seem like rocket surgery.

I asked a friend about this who has done some trucking and he seems to think it has a lot to do with new trucks having automatic transmissions then also, or perhaps obviously, a severe lack of training. Says he was just thrown in one to figure it out and it sounded like maybe it wasn't quite as straight forward as you would think?

We had a driver who lost his brakes jump out of his cab right before it went over the edge westbound at the dirt pullout just before the 244. Semi went all the way down, practically onto hwy 40. Itís a miracle he wasnít killed, or the ghost-driven semi didnít kill/injure anyone else.

Some years back we had an asphalt truck continue to the 244 wb exit after losing his brakes. Semi went straight at the curve at the bottom of the ramp, and damn near cleared the creek. Driver didnít make it, but again, miracle no one else was involved.
