Darker sand does help.
Mag chloride IS salt
It will only melt ice above about 16* or so. There are other products that will work in lower temps... usually mag with other products in it like corn biproduct if some sort

I call them "red plate specials" for a reason.
It actually is helpful in that they are identifiable.

Westbound on Sunday mornings
Understanding that unforseen issues could pop up (idiots, snowfall...) how is traffic heading westbound from Golden to Copper on Sunday mornings? I had planned to drive to Frisco Saturday night but may be stopping in Golden saturday evening and heading to Copper Sunday morning.
Thanks

Well that didn’t take long. Westbound already closed at the tunnel.

Westbound was open back up by 3:00pm. Not that it has really helped much...

EB closed as of a little bit ago at Silverthorne.

^^^ that would be great but it still comes down to enforcement. Half the vehicles driving during a period of “traction law” right now don’t have the right equipment and don’t care apparently.

One time I ended up stopped for an 1.5 hours on a weekday mid-day. It was enough local traffic that everyone pulled left or right eurostyle to keep a center lane open for tow trucks and cops and it even held for 20-30 minutes before assholes decided to clog it up into a 3 lane cluster. Eventually, after seeing no more emergency vehicles and seeing that there was no traffic moving from the I70 cams up the hill, I called work and said I wouldn't make it in, then backed down the I70 shoulder for 1/2 a mile to a turn around and was home in 20 minutes. Had I not, I would have sat there not moving for another 2.5+ hours (I was just barely past the Copper exit and there multiple jack knifes up Vail Pass, no injuries).
Traffic was super light and almost no cars were going the other way. It took probably an hour for traffic to have backed up to where I got stopped, yet CSP didn't close the highway at Copper until 30 minutes after I got stopped just 3/4mi past Copper! CSP could have easily closed the highway earlier and turned people around in an organized manner, but they didn't. They let 6mi of cars sit bumper to bumper on the highway motionless for over 4 hours with snow building up (they couldn't plow with stopped traffic). They think it is fine to have people sit in their cars on the highway for hours on end when it is totally unnecessary to do so.
So you know what CSP? Fuck you. You could prevent most of that shit by acting sensibly. But at least I'm not a puss and backed down the shoulder to more easily clear out of the way if an emergency vehicle appears.Originally Posted by blurred

Another reason to always make sure you have a full tank of gas before getting on the highway. That and it adds much needed weight for traction.

General philosophy of, you aren't stuck in traffic, you are traffic.
Aspen doesn't do the numbers game.. for better and worse, but yeah, feels busier.

I often listen to the scanner for entertainment purposes during storms. The mutual lack of coordination and even basic information sharing between CSP and CDOT is comical. They themselves even make jokes about it with dispatch.

Looks like I’m in the honey-hole for this storm! Steamboat is in the bullseye.
