Indeed... there will be no lift lines if the ski areas don't open. Checkmate!

Fuck, not liking the direction of CO’s CV data. At this rate, they’ll open mountains at 25% capacity.

Mountains will not open at 25% or even 50%. Ski hills made that clear to the gov.

Hmm, I thought 50% was the mandated reduction and that some mag on the “inside” said mountains were even looking at the possibility of 33%.

That "mag on the inside" didn't have any idea what they were talking about.

ski season is happening everything is moving forward like a normal year
the ski areas have told the gov't what they are doing and the ski areas are pretending like they are waiting for the goverment to tell them what they are suppose to be doing
its all bullshit lots of posturing and pretending going on
the amount of money on the line is too much for another shut down again everyone is pretending like they care but all the care about is money thats all places like summit county are built on
fucking money, if you think we care about tourists experience and how happy they are forget it it's all about reaching into their pockets
sure it may get shut down, the limits on skiers and all that stuff is bullshit don't kid yourself
summit county crushed it this summer the numbers have broken records
making money is much more important than keeping people safe, sure I can pin point people and issues that have been swept under the rug lately, but thats not fair to them

I guaranfuckingtee there will be major restrictions put in place if Summit, Eagle, Aspen, or wherever become major hotspots with the local hospitals overflowing. Of course it’s all about the money and they’ll do all they can but given it’s mid-Oct and we’re already trending badly, I’m just saying this can’t be a good sign.

It's is pretty nuts how the trend is going right now. It is supposed to be slow season, but numbers are UP UP UP. Case rates are higher than they have EVER been.

The tourists were supposed to be gone, they aren't. Schools have started. But those populations are not the real cause of the spike.

It's everyone having get togethers or being lax on masking/distancing in the workplace.

We are starting to see hospital cases in CO which typically lag behind case spikes by 2-3 weeks (based on predominant transmitting demographics and chains of infection into vulnerable populations or multiplication in less vulnerable populations and then the time it takes to become acutely ill). CDPHE went over this yesterday and it was the most doom and gloom that I'd heard since March. What is sticking in my mind is some of the modeling that I dismissed from early summer was predicting the spike we are seeing now to occur now. Based on this new trend, everything gets shut down in December unless we bend the curve the right way. It is far easier to do it now than in November.

If the hospitals fill, things will shut down. That will be BAD. We must not let it get there. However, everyone has caution fatigue and local cops don't want to break up parties or write tickets for public health order violations, so... I'm feeling pessimistic.

We love to speculate about lift ops, it's exhausting!
For an enjoyable winter, we're all going to have to give up more time, money or expectations than before - pick your poison.

Exactly as I’m feeling. I’m not sure there will be another Stay At Home “lockdown” like before, but I could see huge restrictions on anything public to get a handle on this if it keeps going this way.

While the tourists aren't completely gone, there's definitely far fewer. I'm not seeing much evidence in Breck of more people not wearing masks, but if it's happening at work or in offices, I wouldn't. The one variable that has noticeably changed since this summer is the schools. My nephew's class at Silverthorne Elementary has been quarantined, my daughter's cross country team was quarantined with a few kids sick and testing positive. Isn't it very difficult to trace cases if the kids are spreading the virus asymptomatically and possibly causing the uptick in cases we're seeing? Or is asymptomatic spread unlikely?

At any rate, we need to be MUCH more vigilant about curbing the spread or we're fucked this winter.

Nice post. I bolded the key imo.

Down here in Durango the tourist season has slowed down significantly, but not to normal levels for this time of year. That said, mask usage from visitors has been pretty good and local provisions have kept out of town folks from gathering large groups with locals at the bars or in ways that spread the virus badly. I've yet to hear of a single case in La Plata county that can be confirmed to have been contracted directly from a tourist out in public. I'm sure it has happened, but not at the level most expected. I love to blame tourons for all of our problems just like the rest of us, but it is clear to me now that it is not the texans that are responsible for the recent outbreaks around here.

We had outbreaks at three major restaurants in town that forced shutdowns. The rumor is that almost all the cases attended a house party a few days before with some people who were visiting from out of the state. Fort Lewis has been forced to shut down a huge portion of their athletics following a big party and people are hosting "secret" music festivals in the woods. When it comes to COVID restrictions, there is a general attitude around town of, "do as I say, not as I do." Everyone I know (myself included) is having BBQs, going on long drives to the desert, sleeping around, having housewarming parties, and just doing everything we'd normally do, besides packing the bars on the weekends.

For the most part we've been totally fine. Our community basically spent the entire summer expecting some kind of outbreak, and it didn't happen. It's understandably difficult to stay vigilant when the town is packed with tourists and no one is sick. Now that restrictions/attitudes are more lax and winter is coming the virus is sneaking up on us and it feels like no one is paying any attention. Everyone is just talking about what a great year it will be to get into backcountry skiing

since this is where we bitch about traffic. Durango has some awesome trails but your traffic sucks. Would of thought with all those Texas plates going by I wouldn't of almost froze to death waiting 1.5hrs to get a ride from Cascade back to Molas.

I've had some cold waits down there during the winter, but 1.5hrs to get back to Molas sucks. Did you try showing some skin? The locals love that.

Maybe if you posted closer to I70 or in the sprocket rockets forum you would have had better luck?

Can't believe I just did it. Pulled off i70 and got a hotel room because the road is too icy. No snow tires yet so a couple moments of yeeha and then fuck that.

Alamo rented the wife a car with bald (illegal level) tires and watered down wiper fluid that froze in the lines at above zero temps. Fuck Alamo.

Probably a previous renter that threw H2o in the reservoir. I wouldn't give Alamo credit for checking the washer fluid levels.
