    Telemark tutorial

Hi everyone, I'm a college student in Montana. This Sunday I'm going to be teaching a Telemark tutorial for some of my fellow classmates, and I realized that, having learned Telemark skiing from watching my dad, a seasoned Telemark skier, I never took actual lessons. I'm a very good skier, and I know I can teach, but do any of you have any tips I can give to help these kids learn how to free their heel?

Fix the heel fix the problem.

On a serious note PM Viggen. He is an incredible tele skier and instructor, as good as they come. And he lives in Montana.

Start with a safety meeting, drop the needle on some reggae and everyone will figure it out in time.

I love to tele, but it's pointless. Totally, thoroughly pointless. Also, it is NOT an excuse to suck.

    That said,

#1) buy that telemark tips book (mike and Allen?) and telemark skiing: freeheel and parallel techniques

#2) tele up and down without turning to get used to position. Don't go low.

#3) once comfy, practice garlands across the slope.

    Also keep weight forward, etx

    1) sell tele-gear to stinky hippie or, more likely, trustafari or cube monkey
    2) use money to buy AT gear
    3) enjoy skiing

    This too.

Tele made a lot more sense before the quantum leaps in AT gear in the last 7-8 years.

If you insist though, PM willie61. He's a tele instructor at Kirkwood and I'm sure he'd set you straight with some tips.

Just to clarify for those saying switch to AT, I also ride with a fixed heel and I snowboard as well. I have been skiing alpine for 17 years, snowboarding for 7, and telemark for 5. I love each sport for different reasons, and rather than picking a side, I love them each for their quirks. Thank you for the advice about who to contact! It should be a lot of fun this weekend!

By the end of the lesson the student shall have internalized:

    1. Telemark is a sucker's game.
    2. Telemark is twice the effort for half the control.

The student shall display mastery of the following actions:
    1. Face plant between two ski- tips.
    2. Granola farts.
    3. Taking skins off without removing skis.
    4. Double pole plants.

    Exercises to achieve mastery:
    1. Pinch the pencil.
    2. Grab the drink.
    3. The steering wheel.
    4. Warp speed skiing through tight trees.
    Homework:
2000 words on "Uphill pinky toe, downhill arch -- what it means to me."

Hi Horton, I'm the one who made Double Pole Plants (DPP) popular. They work for outwest steeps in powder and eastern trees.

Pinky toe, big toe. Pressure the back ski 60%, front ski 40% (while learning). Lots of vertical extension and compression.

But most importantly, tell em to have fun and enjoy the challenge of learning something new and difficult. Things the old facks around here haven't done in way too long.

    Oh yeah. Pot helps too.

Oh - there's the tele-douche that's been missing since the homeless shelter shutdown last year.

They can take up underwater basketweaving! it's really difficult!
