Last year I went to an awesome local fly fishing convention and a guy by the name of Rich Murphy had a booth dedicated to striper fishing. I walked out with his book, "Fly Fishing for Striped Bass", and haven't even had the time to read it cover to cover yet. There is so much information packed into it I'll admit to being slightly overwhelmed.

Anyway, there is a chapter devoted to patterns and that's where I found that eel pattern. To paraphrase, the body tubing's main purpose is to keep the front portion of the fly rigid. If you've ever paid attention to the way sand eels swim, I hadn't, their heads remain virtually stationary compared to the rest of their body when swimming. Will report back with results after this weekend.

    Cool!
Nice to see the thread pop up again. Unfortunately, my tying gear is buried.

there aren’t a lot of feelings that compare to catching a fish on a fly you tied

I caught my first fish on a fly rod today, also on a fly I tied.

    Congrats.

That process that you just went through will last you a lifetime, and affect everything you do in your life in some small way.

Bull trout. Or Dolly Varden. They use to say they were the same but now they are slightly different.

The only char native to Washington.

He was way prettier in person. His spots were golden and he was a deeper greenish brown.

It appears to have the broader head and long jaw length of a bull trout. If the head is a little large for the body and the upper jaw extends well past the eye, it is probably a bull trout. This is the time of year when bull trout migrate down from small tribs to winter over in holes in the river.

    Whatcha tying?

So naming your flies.... Just for kicks and giggles I looked at all my boxes & totaled up my flies, and I have exactly 1 zillion. No I haven’t tied all of those, but a fair bunch, and that’s a lot of names.
I also lose flies, (very rarely), it seems like I would just get too attached to them if they had names. I have more of a rancher/cattle relationship with my flies.
Well maybe I'm the faggot America
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda
