Deer hair can be a real pain. This is my first hair head that has come out not looking like a total mess.

Looks good to me, using a razor blade to trim it? That made the biggest difference for shaping muddlers and the like.

Yup, that made a huge difference. Got some thin ones that flex and can be bent easily. Makes it so much easier to shape the head.

as noted in the OP, materials ain't cheap. i think I've got most of the basic stuff and can tie a many patterns with what I've got... as long as they're red, white, or pink

last week I found out a local creek not 10 minutes from the office has muskies in it. I'm going to need a bigger box

Been messing around at the fly tying bench a bit lately. I'm headed to Africa in a couple weeks. It's not a fishing trip but I found out that the GT fishing is supposed to be really good in one of the spots we are staying on the coast. Might as well throw some feather missiles at 'em while I'm there.

duly noted. I was having trouble getting the hair on the big fly to stand up and achieve the volume I was after, which equaled moar hair. any tips? I keep forgetting to tie the hair in backwards and pull it back, I think that would probably work best for minimal hair and maximum splay.



here's a slight variation of a fly I've had great success with for pike and bluefish. it will be interesting to see if the wire has any affect on bites

there are a couple ways to add bulk without adding a ton of material. one thing you could do is prop up the bucktail with either a dubbing ball behind it or something like polar chenille. tying it in facing forward and then bending it back works really well too. less is almost always more.

No, not weedless. But they ride hook up, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
