    North Carolina backcountry

Thanks to out recent cold and snowy weather I got out 3 times last week for some backcountry turns. The snow was really good quality and pretty deep in spots. Here's some pics:

Usually when I think of 'North Carolina' and 'powder' together, it involves Widespread Panic.
    Way to get after it.

You can see the Roan area in one of the pics, but it takes about an hour to drive there.

ah. i've been through the roan highlands and always thought it'd be one of the most exotic locales to ski compared to anywhere else on earth.

pretty cool that much of the roan ridge is higher than mt washington and you go through many climatic zones on the way up from creek to summit.

goddam gorgeous and no one talks about it.

It's a fun and pretty wild place to go to during the winter. Roan gets a lot of snow, but the winds are usually so bad that the balds don't hold much snow. Typically skiing is done on the road, the Appalachian Trail or one of the x-country trails.

the xc descent off of roan (with tree skiing options) nets you 4000+ feet of vert i heard.

is that beech or sugar mt ski area from one of the pics?

Awesome! Used to work at Nantahala Outdoor Center in 91. Been all around that area in warmer weather. Cool to see the BC angle.
