That would be a heck of a double down.. They both keep busy producing future customers for Tesla and future suckers to buy and flog crypto.. A baby Musk coin/ nft in the near future?

Cash flow inflated because the coin sale proceeds were added to the earnings bottom line..

I know very little about corporate accounting, but it sounds shady as fuck to realize a loss and call it earnings

Sell digital assets for $80 you bought for $100 still gets you $80 of cash flow.

    Bitcoin....who's gotten into it?

    What now?

Cash flow does not equal earnings. TSLA sold because it felt a little pinched by liquidity. They also say that the bitcoin they sold was sold at a gain, but that the bitcoin they kept represents a $100M unrealized loss, making their BTC portfolio looks a bit ugly and their balance sheet also a little less pretty.

The way they said it makes it seem like they accounted for that loss through the income statement after the sale, but it isn’t clear to me whether that is always the case and I don’t know how GAAP wants you to treat BTC “investments.” (Does GAAP know how? Somebody who knows should weigh in here, I refuse to dive into GAAP for non-work related purposes.)

Are they just marking to market off of the total portfolio and then realizing gains off of individual BTC? I can’t quite puzzle how that even works…. (It doesn’t, it’s all the same)
    focus.

100 cash outflow on purchase, 80 cash inflow on sale.

Shouldn’t have impacted accounting earnings though, assuming it was MTM, as the decreases would have hit the income statement in each quarter

I saw Novogratz talking about more regulation needed. If the SEC follows through they will put Coinbase and most “tokens” out of business. Be careful what you wish for and I wouldn’t be in any stablecoin or token right now.

Well that is one prediction that no one can disagree with.

Lots of alternatives to SWIFT have been floated. ICE has one, GS has one.

H's still got laserish eyes on twitter. Very curious, wonder if he got pushed out due to bear or it was his idea like Dorsey.

In any case, he's a smart guy and already done good work organizing the bitcoin mining council. I have some mixed feelings about someone with that much bitcoin having so much influence, but what can you do? He is a net positive for bitcoin adoption and will promote favorable regulation for it. But he goes on vehemently about other cryptos being securities. Popcorn time.
