I can't be the only person who has never, ever paid a fee to open or maintain an account at a bank, and I sure wasn't getting preferential treatment because of how much I was depositing.

FTR, I'm not necessarily shitting all over bitcoin/blockchain, but I think the notion of it democratizing access to "banking" is flawed.
yeah but almost everbuddy has a phone

I've seen it on TV where there is system somewhere in africa where people pay each other doing transfers on their phones and this was just a transaction in a market but its still real money they were trading not bitcoin

I was fixing the POS system in a post office and somebody was buying a whole shwack of can post money orders so i asked the supervisor wtf and she said some people are so poor or have fucked up and no bank will deal with them so this is the only way to pay bills

    Nothing special.
Just in case you aren't aware, governments own, manage and regulate the infrastructure that the networks need.
In 10 seconds, the NSA or a state actor could annihilate the Bitcoin P2P network with simple routing and partitioning attacks.
The entire network relies on bootstrapping, peer discovery, and ISP/router configurations.
Some people think that ad-hoc networks are resilient to that or even a plain DDOS attack.
    Nope.
Never mind mining pool attacks and preferential transaction confirmations.
Even in China, the government allows VPN addresses through. But they don't have to.
Turkey ... shut down the entire fucking internet.
Venezuala right now .. Not your Oil, Not your Bitcoin
A script kiddie can even map the entire BTC network and launch DDOS attacks on users and the pool nodes in a myriad of creative ways.
    #opsec
    Surprise surprise.
    Sorry For Your Loss
You would be far better hosting an append only spreadsheet database on Amazon Web Services for a very small fee. You would greatly increase the number of transactions per second, and cut out millions of tons of greenhouse gases, and ... it would be more secure.
The Bitcoin network is no more safe for business than a family of ducks trying to cross a road.
    Quack. Quack.
    LOL.

I get a kick out of how this bug gets touted as a feature.

Go ahead and trot out the use case where this “feature” would have prevented a loss by a normal consumer. Truly. It’s a thought experiment I’ve apparently failed at.

In the us, fees and other banking costs associated with banking, as well as hurdles like the right id, are inhibitors to use of the banking system by the poor. The banks see you as a way to make money, if you are rich, they lend your money. If you are poor, they charge you high fees. I would think an efficient low cost digital currency would actually solve many of the banking accessibility issues faced by the poor.

While the “underbanked” isn’t entirely a straw man, it’s as much an issue of education as it is access. Not sure a hard to use crypto currency is going to break people out of the payday lending or cash only cycle.

Also, given that the issue is largely one of education, it seems alarming to me that there isn’t a trusted third party to both watch out for and assume some of the risk for these people. While it’s true banks and credit unions have fees and other charges, it’s also true that they assume liability and are obligated and incented to provide recourse to their customers. There’s no mechanism for that in BTC, which is what I’m really referring to with my poorly phrased question above. Transactions are one way, and without keys you’re hosed. That sucks, for all the reasons you shouldn’t hide your dollars under a mattress.
