Photo TR: Dogtooth Range S traverse
It's been a pretty crummy winter for snowfall, even here in BC where it always puts out. Which has led to an equally crummy snowpack with all manner of crusts facets and hoars to kill you no matter what aspect you take a liking to. Last week we got a big ol' storm like everyone else, with extreme winds to top it off which we never get here. Temps were getting high and it looked like I wouldn't be working anyways, so a day post storm, Lseed and I started piecing together plans to bag a 3 day traverse I cooked up involving a lot of alpine terrain and a lot of low angle options, with some rad ass options we could scout for next time. Three things defined this traverse; big views, big lines and big naturals. Lots of other big stuff too. Oh, and the sketchiest snowpack I've ever seen.
A few days post storm, we woke up bright and early and dropped Luke's car at the end point, and took mine 55km down the road to start our climb up.
The trusty steed that brought us there. Extra maggot points for including Hestras in the pic
And into the trees and blinding sun
Then sub-alpine up to the sled schralped triple nipple
Where we got some big views of some big mountains. The Goodsir Towers in the rockies
After gaining proper alpine for a while we descended off a very gentle col back into treeline, below some gnar to drool over. Some gnar that can be hit with all of ~100m out-of-the-way vert, and almost no horizontal. Dug the tent in so deep we didn't even need tree shelter
Big views. Conrad icefield in the Purcells
Big lines. Luke decides to jettison skis on a slab rock facet farm
Big naturals
Looks like she's ready to go.. Just gotta cut this cornice.
An hour later, results
Big lines. I'm claiming first descent of this beast
Big man gets little
Big views. More Purcell porn
Big lines. Can easily be hit as part of a traverse, while heading in the right direction the whole time
Big naturals. Meadow skipping needs to get redefined apparently
Flattop mountain. We made a valiant effort to ski the rock hard sastrugi with more rock than snow but gave up and booted most to get the summit. A whopping 2477m.
Looking over the not so flat NE face. Saw a cornice with a mean ol' crack, set my pole 6" away from said crack and bam there she goes. Bombs away from a ton or 2 or cornice.
And the resulting avalanche. Unfortunately ours didn't go as big as the older ones and hit the lower gully... shucks 450m of vert to end of tongue
NE face from another angle. Awesome
After all that cornice fun it was time to ski down to camp
Where we were attacked by murderous hoar
Skippity-do-da
Skippity-day. Flattop on left, camp lake on right.
My-oh-my, what a gorgeous day. Purcells and Selkirks behind
Someone shit the bed
Looking back south with Steamboat mtn barely breaking thru the inversion

Looking north with the natural extension to the trip over peak DG25 to ski its badass north face and into 12 mile creek proper. We dropped in here and out this valley as we didn't have stability for anything much over 30*, had probably a dozen settlements by this point.
Finally some pow pow
Aint no thang, just another wicked descent you could have while going in the right direction.
Other than wind and avy effect, this would be a probably nameless fucking picturesque couloir off another nameless rad peak in the Dogs.
Bit o' bushwhack traverse, and soon we were on good ol' fashioned deactivated logging road.
Then after descending 10* logging road for half a dozen clicks, time to use that kick wax on the next sled packed 5km.
In contention for the best view of the trip
All in all, it was an awesome traverse. My first traverse, and I planned it all myself without following someone else's cookie cutter route. Minor routefinding mishaps, but found the logging roads and outs without any extra nights or doubling back, and found pretty well the most efficient and safe way thru.
A parting overview shot. Got in at the far far left of shot, on backside of ridge/range, got out at far right in the trees on the treed bench. Pretty impressive to get a look at everything you just skied from a long way back.

Flying the Bluehouse colors in Western Canada! Let me know if you want some rad skis!!
"He is god of snow; the one called Ullr. Son of Sif, step son of Thor. He is so fierce a bowman and ski-runner that none may contend! He is quite beautiful to look upon and has all the characteristics of a warrior. It is wise to invoke the name of Ullr in duels!"
