Thumbs up TR: First big storm of the season | Berthoud Pass, CO (Dec. 4, 2013)

So far in Colorado, it's been an excellent season that has provided more powder days in 2 short months than all of last year. Lot of hype had been building since last weekend about a storm that was supposed to unload anywhere from 20-48" of snow in most areas. When sunrise hit this morning and the reports were out, some immediately called the storm a huge dud. Those never experienced Berthoud Pass this day.

Photos below are a small and early sampling of the conditions. Without exaggeration, snow depths were easily waist-deep with overnight snow pushing past 24". While temperature dropped below zero, wind was missing, something more rare than spotting a unicorn carrying Richard Simmons playing the ukulele. Truly a cleansing day in the mountains surrounded by great friends and blower snow.

The up is usually better than the down; just not today.

    Lots of happy faces.

And plenty of untouched snow to ski.

And sometimes you have to show a little skin to get back to the goods.

    Classic.

    Snow looks rather inviting.
