Bells are probably different on a bike than a pedestrian, but they're never to scare bears away. They work great for attracting dogs and alerting hikers, so obviously most useful on populated trails and when moving fast. I got a momma to stand up and look threatening just off a trail some years back and the bell was certainly the main thing making noise. Is that a pro or a con? IDK, we both went on our way. I like to think she listened as I receded into the distance and got back to her cubs in peace.

The trails where I used to see an occasional bear seem to have been cleared by the dogs and hikers these days, so it's been repurposed. Hikers are more appreciative.

live across the valley from swizz in the foothills a few miles from the trestle creek fire, chunky ash and burnt pine needles covered everything yesterday, much needed rain last night, walked outside to thick smog and everything smells like a drowned firepit

I hopped over to Butte for some CDT MTB to try to find clear skies. Still hazy but not nearly as bad as INW.

Technically, yes, Friday. Very nice dirt! If you thought you heard a distant, reflexive "fuck off!" when the band singer dude asked who wanted to move here, that could have been a real sound. Possibly.

Apropos of nothing, but I still think the most untapped potential for a new ski area in WA exists up in the Selkirks near Metaline Falls, or at least that's where I want a ski area to be built the most. Compared to other spots in Eastern WA, they get more snow (furthest inland temperate rain forest in NA), the elevations are higher, and the terrain is more rugged.

Unfortunately most high peaks (Sullivan Mtn, Crowell Ridge, Gypsey Peak, Salmo Mtn, Helmer Mtn, and Mankato Mtn), are all in the wilderness Salmo-Priest wilderness boundary, but Hall Mountain would be a great option. It has nice views of Sullivan Lake, a nicely sloped north-facing slope, a road leading up most of it, and the elevations are pretty conducive to skiing (flat-ish potential base areas at 3600ft, 4100 ft, and 4550 ft, with a summit elevation of 6,328ft).

The top of 49* North is 5773 feet (base at 3923ft) and Mt Spokane's summit is 5886 feet (lowest lift base is at 3818ft), and both are in areas with less snowfall, but seem to be doing just fine at the moment.

Looks like fun terrain. It might be tough to support a ski area with a very small population pool in the area. The single-lift model a la Turner Mountain might be possible but that hill was established on a former clearcut that meant they didn't have to cut runs, just maintain them. Put the base area around 3500' where the road turns East for 3000 vert off the peak.

It's definitely a pipedream, yeah. Ione's single runway airport would need to be expanded, or people could just fly into Spokane, and for hotels the towns of Ione, Metaline, and Metaline Falls would need more development.

The Turner Mountain model would definitely be a good blueprint.

an increase in the region's lift-served slopes might mimic a
    silverton/arctic valley model:
    minimal chairs,
    minimal grooming, if any
    avy mitigation

there's no terrain here that can rival silverton,
still, the concept is not out of the question, except
the west side has the people and the bankroll,
then there's that pesky climate change thing ....

first snow in the valley last year 10/24
