Apparently there was a fatal accident at Schweitzer this afternoon. Skier hit a tree at fairly low speed near the top of White Lightening. RIP

Any further news on this? Not seeing it in typical local news outlets yet.

No, I haven't seen anything more. Rumors of what happened are flying around but he apparently was either skiing backwards or looking over his shoulder back up the hill when he hit it. I've heard both a puncture wound to his neck with bleed-out and the other rumor is blunt force trauma with him dying on the helicopter on the way to Sacred Heart in Spokane. Either way, really a bad situation. I didn't know him but a number of people I know did. He is/was a long time Schweitzer skier with a place on the mountain. His kids were involved in SARS with the kids of another friend.

I was up there today too. Any day with soft snow and blue sky is hard to beat. Gotta love spring skiing!

Anybody lose a pair of keys on top of Stevens Saturday? They were sitting up there on top of the snow. Super weird.

Wow! That actually looks quite ski-able! Last time I skied that face (admittedly back in the old tele days), it was after camping on the other side. The death crust was so heinous we had to keep our skins on for the exit!

What is the best IPAC Forecast area to look at to monitor avalanche conditions on Sherman Pass?

Anybody got a pair of skis that will fit a 314 bsl for a day or two in the next week or two? Happy to let ya hold onto my passport to ensure return and hook ya up with some tasty beers for the use!

Today was so good at the Kan. Chair 1 was off line since Sunday so we stayed there for a bit in the morning and went to the back side once it got warm and tracked on the front side. Untracked pow all day to the last chair. I’m beat and can’t wait for some hot tub time tonight.

    No shit, Sherlock.

I know that neither of them are ideal for the Kettles, I was just curious if one was slightly less bad for tracking that particular mountain range than the other.

Try Canadian Avalanche Association, Kootenay Boundary. Probably the best scenario.

I'm by no means an avy pro but the variation we found up there this year was significant. Dont underestimate how much wind scour and deposition there can be.

Got up to Silver this afternoon. It was deep but really HEAVY! Seemed like some freezing fog created a thin crust layer. Had to keep the speed up and tips up and got a killer quad work out, but it was thigh deep in places! Got a few really fun runs on Wardner complete with chunky face shots . I would guess the snow was better first thing in the morning. NFG snow was better but really tracked out. Still a deep pow day in March is always a treat.Click image for larger version.
