Foggy basin living up to its rep yesterday. Grey cloud hugging dust on a pretty lumpy crust. Anti-social distances and masks maintained, except this little Casper.

Nothing worth posting about, really, but was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Noticed that Schweitzer pulled out of the Powder Alliance a few weeks back and became concerned.

Hey guys, I just got a job transfer and will be moving from Portland, OR to Coeur D’Alene, ID next month. I’ve skied Schweitzer and liked it quite a bit, but thinking about going with a season pass at Lookout Pass. With the border closed, Red and Whitewater are probably out. Lookout is waaay less expensive than Schweitzer and I’m guessing less crowded. Can any of you speak to the powder they claim to get out there? Is it steep enough to really enjoy the deep days or will I just be frustrated? Hoping we get a killer winter with La Niña bringing tons of snow this year!

Lookout doesn't have steeps unless they have gotten in the lift for the new area otherwise it's a fun but intermediate mtn, there's a reason the old folks love it.

I'd consider the Indy Pass. Off the top of my head you'd have 3 within 60-90min, and 2 south of you towards Boise.

Good location and opportunity to try a bunch of new hills.

Not 3 nearby, just Silver Mtn and 49 Degrees.

Brundage and Tamarack south of you (4hrs?) - could be a weekend trip.

Mission Ridge is probably 5hrs west.

Just a thought, I've been thinking of it from Missoula.

Any thoughts on Silver Mt now that they are part of the Powder Alliance?

If you’ll put a lot of days in at Silver, get the Silver pass and enjoy the Pow Alliance. If not, get the Indy Pass. Pretty hard to go wrong out here, there’s always discounts on day passes (free Toyota days, 2-for-1 days, etc).

if yer gonna go, i would NOT recommend the trail motel..... despite the reasonable rack rates.

Silver would only be 35-45min from where I’ll be living so midweek afternoon laps could be doable. If they have good terrain and snow, plus powder alliance, that might be the play. I’ve heard lots of complaints about the gondola though.

Yeah, may be only 35-45 minutes from where you live but you need to add another 20 or so to get up the gondola. Same thing in reverse when going down. And that's if the wind isn't blowing too hard, hard enough to shut it down.

New to the area, but have two thoughts: do you want to be on any gondola ride during COVID? On the other hand, the combo Silver/49N pass is a good deal (was like $90 extra until a few weeks ago). 49N may be a bit of a trek from CdA for a daily driver but for the odd day here & there you'd see that value back fast.

Have they been recruiting you hard?
Common sense. So rare today in America it's almost like having a superpower.

gondola has it's own highway exit. 20 minutes on the gondy vs no access road shenanigans.... not a bad trade off.

This guy knows what's up. Silver makes you take a LONG gondola ride up the mountain to get to the snow and then you have to take the same ride back down at the end of the day. Plus they have a funky lift system and chair 4 loves to break down. The Schwizz is definitely where it's at.

Schweitzer is foggy and crowded, not to mention the sketchy drive up highway 95. Parking can be a major issue and the mountain might be big, but it's pretty damn flat.

Silver mountain is a 4 season resort and is a much easier and safer drive. Silver gets more snow and better quality to boot. Less foggy days, and typically colder. The North Face Glades at Silver are probably the best steep skiing in the inland NW with Canadian border closed. Plus the bonus 49 Degrees North access and Powder Alliance.

Personally I'd get a silver pass if I lived in CDA.

Lookout pass is a good for one ride tickets to tour in the spring, sometimes winter(big face likes to slide)... That's about it.
