Yes she would be taking a spot away from another athlete, but someone ranked 40th.
Some nations take more than the 4 allotted athletes to the Olympics and make a game time decision on who is going to race. This is not unusual.

She can still ski. And is a helluva marketing machine. The USOC couldn't afford her not making it.

Quite the two training days for LV and the American speed squad at Cortina d'Ampezzo, eh? Vonn won both training runs by a second, Goggia in 2nd and 4th, Wiles in third both days. Shiffrin doing her march up the ladder as she did in Lake Louise...13th then 5th today. McKennis 4th and 15th. Rest of the squad skiing fast as well. Mancuso 20 seconds out yesterday and DNS today. Seems like her career is much on the waning side 'cause of her health issues. LV and Julia have raised the bar here in the U.S. and helped bring the next generation of women speed skiers to the fore. Not to mention attracting some of the best speed coaches in the world.

Good luck in tomorrow's race, gals...

I don't think she plans to retire anytime soon. At least not until she surpasses Stenmark's 86 WC wins.....

Crack AP news reporting: "Heinz Haemmerle, Vonn's ski technician, said the big change for Vonn's ice setup is switching from rounded or "cap" edges to flatter "sandwich" sides."

LV just won in Garmisch, .02 over Goggia. Breezy Johnson in 4th!
They got the mandatory training run and the race off today. Super G start; shorter course.
    Another race tomorrow...
