Apple nerds help me with my music!

Ok so I have the full steve jobs brown nosing setup.

Iphone + Ipad + Macbook air + Apple TV + Airport, etc

So theoretically everything should work together (although given how long it took for copy and paste to come who knows).

I use the TV + apple TV in my living room / kitchen / den (small apartment) as a speaker in conjunction with a couple of airplay speaker.

I have about 130 Gigs of music on NAS connected to my apple router. I can access the music just fine from my computer and if my computer is plugged in and turned on I can play from my computers library (sourcing the remote music) from the remote apps on my phone and ipad. The problem is that since my only computer is a laptop, quite often it is "sleeping" and when it sleeps I can't access my library.

What I want to know is if there is there away to play my music through the apple TV when my laptop is asleep.

    Can it be done?

iTunes Match is a pretty easy solution... Music is on my MacBook but is synced and stored in the cloud, then can play on the iPhone or Apple TV. Costs like 20 or 30 bucks a year

yep you need iCloud if you want to play to devices with computer off. Annoying since with Android you could have a music player access your NAS directly.

ya, i've got Match too, not sure i like it. Seems like it doesn't access any music from the hard drive anymore, and it mixed up some CD's in the process. I do like have commercial free iTunes Radio tho.

easiest solution would be to change the sleep setting on the laptop, obviously...

I was just at the apple store last night and asked the same question. Since the appletv is not a computer, it cannot access the nas. A mac mini attached to the tv might be the solution.

My buddy has a company and his website mentions music through Apple TV. Not sure if it fits you. I'm a lifelong used Mac buyer with a G5 so WTF do I know.

I have a similar setup as you do, and to run the Apple TV I just repurposed an old laptop that is always running iTunes as a sort of server for the whole system. It's an easy/cheap way to do it if you have a semi-functional old computer laying around somewhere.

I have a fairly similar system, but mine is a Mac Mini instead of an NAS. It works pretty well but I'm seeking better remote operation, might go to JRiver on MacOSx. Anyway, this is *the place* to go for answers:

I use match... usually works really well. Stream through my computer when it's on so I don't blow up the data on my internet plan.

Is there some kind of file browser you can download for the iPhone that lets you see network storage?
    No longer stuck.

Almost certainly, but it depends on the storage, what kind? Find out, then search.
