    Odd binging mount question

I have a pair of 181 k2 hard side's that I am going to put a pair of guardians on. I checked to make sure the guardians will fit with the existing holes in the skis. They will fit, but I will have to go forward of boot center by 2.5cm or back by 1.5cm. My question is, what will be a better mounting position for an almost backcountry only set up?

You'll probably get hollered at cause gear related questions ought to be posted in Tech Talk, but I'd go 1.5 back unless you're skiing switch or in the trees all the time. They'll be easier to open up without getting squirrely. Then again I don't have darksides, so grain of salt and all that

Don't go forward or back. Mount them on center and heli-coil any of the overlapping holes.
    That's what I would do.

The guardians are a few millimeters wider than the jesters that used to be on the skis. Because of that, if I were to mount them at boot center, the new holes from the guardians would line up with the outside half of the holes for the toe piece from the jesters.

Heli-coils require a much larger hole to be drilled and then the heli-coil is mounted in the large hole and the binding screw in the heli-coil.

There are also relatively cheap nylon inserts that you can very easily install yourself with a drill bit and stopper and a hammer. There have been posts on here where pull-out strength tests show as good or better (can't remember) results as heli-coils. You can get these parts at slidewright...

The only thing to be careful of is to make sure you can keep your drill bit centered in the correct spot and not pulled into the existing hole. For this you might need a drill press and/or a bit that doesn't have a point (i.e. a hollow core or a forstner bit).

Holy shit, they sell that too!

I agree that neither 2.5cm forward or 1.5cm back are good options, and I would use the above method to mount on the line.
Goal: ski in the 2018/19 season
