I got my 70 westy up roads I still can't believe my young stupid ass attempted. Tahoe/NorCal mags may know Forestdale Divide Road. I took it up the Blue Lakes side, camped up top and then down the 88 side. That was probably in about he early 90's. Did it in my Tundra a couple of years ago- it's been chewed up pretty good since then as that road got internetted, Doubt it would make it now.

I drove an ‘85 westy Wolfsburg weekender for about 15 years on and off. Lots of good times and I enjoyed maintaining and working on it for the most part. Paid $3500 for it in 2002 and sold in 2018 for $3500. I didn’t have the kind of space to keep it indoors any longer and it was showing it’s age, too expensive and time consuming for much of a resto.

Currently saving shekels dreaming of a pop top Eurovan for a third vehicle. Once again same predicament. I could probably afford the van, it’s affording the house with the 4 car garage that’s the problem.

I really really miss my 88 blue Wolfsburg weekender! I now feel so silly for selling it in the early 2000’s.

They’re tough to replace. I’ve thought of trying to find a low top 4wd short wheel base van and sending it in for a pop top add on. Getting the seating arrangement, side table, and storage all correct would be a hassle though.

This photo immediately reminds my of the aftermarket auxiliary blower fan I added to under pipe that ran the hot air from the heat exchangers in the rear to the front interior. It actually made all the difference between no heat and being toasty warm in a 70's type II.

Cool, i hadnt heard of that. The undercarriage heating ducts were definitely a problem in the winter

Basically a simple version of this 6 inch duct fan. Cut the tube running the length of the van and hose clamp it in. Run the power cable to a switch.

The last time I got under my 73 westy after owning it for a few years I could see the sleeve on the joint in the under vehical duct work was completely rusted thru, whatever that connector sleeve was made of it didnt last long so the ducts were not connected which would explain the anemic heat production, I didnt have to fix it cuz I sold the westy

I always depended on the gas heater cuz my german mechanic told me the heat given out by the engine was not good and suggested running an 8' length of dryer hose from the gas heater up to the cab so I took the grill off the heater outlet and jammed a dryer duct hose in the outlet using a heavey wool sock for a gasket and ran that hose up between the seats where I could point it at the windows or jam it up my jacket to warm the core

I just had a sleeping bag handy in the '72 I lived in for a few years. When I bought an '85 Vanagon some years later it was like entering the space age.

Saw this one today. Almost all stock, except the tent, and an air-cooled engine rebuild. Tempted, but my spidey sense said no. Would make a great restoration project for someone with more time than me.
