Published a free simple SnoTel data app for Android

Hey all. If you like looking at snotel data around the US (I'm adding BC and elsewhere here soon), I just posted a SnoTel app in the Google play store.

    iOS Version is live!

I'd be stoked for some feedback and ideas too.

Download it from the Play Store

Slick interface, but have you not added Montana yet?
    No longer stuck.

    Agreed.
It might be with looking for done of the other similar resources. I think for example California has their own set of sites under agriculture or power that has snow data similar to snotel.

    1. SnoTels weren't showing up for me. Just zooming around on Google Earth. Razr Maxx (OG) running 4.1.2.

    2. Abraham is referring to the CA Department of Water Resources' CDEC: http://cdec.water.ca.gov/snow/current/snow/index.html Good call.

Hey all, thanks for the replies. I just added BC in also... you have to select it in the settings.

@StuckAtThunderMtn: MT should be showing. I get a list of all locations across the USA. Does it zero in on your location?

@LightRanger, are you on Wifi or Cell Network? Does it zero in on your location? Thanks for telling me what device you are using!

If you use a file browser on your device, browse to snoteldata and see if there is anything in the folder.... Here is a screenshot I am getting on my Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.2 of MT locations:

Galaxy s3 running 4.1.2. No sites show on mine either. Your folder basically just has some png buttons in it. It's crashed both times I opened it as well after about 30 seconds.

Works fine for me on a Nexus 7 (2013) running AOKP. Picks my location right up and then displays all the local sites. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like when I click on a SNOTEL site it just links me to the site's website. I assumed it would aggregate the data and then display it within the ap.

Great! Its working for the nexus 7. Currently it just grabs the table data for the site selected.

In the snoteldata folder there is a .zip file called usadata.zip that is filled with a bunch of .pngs and afile called snotelwithlabels.kml. There is also a subfolder called kml with the same files in it.

Thanks for the info. Does the kml subfolder also have a file called: snotelwithlabels.kml ?

Well I think it is the amount of snotel data points that is causing the issue. I uploaded a new app package, so if you have it installed you will get an update. I changed the way it checks the data. Please try out the option for BC and let me know if those points work for you all. Thanks again for the feedback! This will be a nice app with everyone help.

Nice job! Works great on my S4 running 4.3 (CM 10.2 9/26 nightly) as far as I can tell. I'll chip in a few bucks if I end up adding it to my quiver.

Yes, the subfolder does have this file.

I updated my phone's firmware to the latest version and updated to the newest version of the app. I now get no Google Earth data, no snotel labels, and the app crashes after about 30 seconds every time.

I'm on a gs4. Seems to be working fine. Haven't updated since my earlier post. As it stands its better than navigating the snotel sites on my phone, but it would be nice to be able to view data in the app. Maybe something to work toward in the future?

@Abraham, are you thinking the minute, hourly, daily, info? I updated the way the data is displayed and will update the play store tonight after work.

Sending it in Dynafits using TGR Forums
