Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don't really pay enough attention between races--did they ban foot-powered cranks?

A little off topic but race related. I was aboard a 10 meter racing sloop with another 16 yr. old, both added late & think the heavy wind made us look better for ballast reasons than anything. Race gun goes and we're pointing into sustained 20+, gusts in the 30's. We tack and my friend starts heading to the new windward side but slips on a sheet line & rolls to and through the lifeline. Has hold of the stanchion with both hands but being dragged at near 10 knots when Jim Marta, the skipper says, "Shit man, either get aboard or let go...you're slowing us down" . Art teacher in H.S. by day, renegade yacht racer on the weekends.

Wow. Thanks! What I get for picking up the thread again at post 96. I'm aggrieved at myself. At least it's the right day for it, even if not the right thread.

Just slight wormhole clarification. There were a few advantages to the cyclors, (in increasing importance). IIRC....
1. More aerodynamic
2. Only one cyclor was doing something other than just pedaling I think. But yes it did free up his hands
3. More Hydraulic pressure = could do more tacking/maneuvers.

The New York Yacht Club’s American Magic sailing team returns to the water Tuesday at its winter base in Pensacola, Florida, to resume training for the first warmup regatta for the 36th America’s Cup.
American Magic isn’t happy that the defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, and the Challenger of Record, Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, failed to meet the Dec. 20 deadline for issuing the race conditions. The big holdup is that Team New Zealand wants an upper wind limit of 24 knots, which was the same as for the 50-foot foiling catamarans used in Bermuda in 2017, while Luna Rossa wants a 20-knot limit.www.apriliaforum.com

I am amazed with the tech it takes to sail with boats like this.

If anyone wants to see some bonkers sailing turn on CBS Sports Network right now: Sydney SailGP is on; a load of F50 foiling catamarans doing mach looney in tight quarters.
I still call it The Jake.

America's Cup
I’m so stoked for this.
While I confess a hankering for the old school close combat match racing of past generation boats the flying monohulls are fricken amazing!
Way more interesting to me that the cats of past couple of regattas.
However naturally NBC had to screw it up and charge a hefty fee for the “Gold Package” to actually watch this live. 🤬🤬

Ok, that wreck was incredible. Come to find out Magic got holed and was sinking, and all teams got together to save it and get it back to the dock. Awesome.

American Magic has looked like shit this whole week. Glad no one was seriously hurt.
Ineos UK behind rockstar Ben Ainslie looks calm, fast, and the boat to beat.I still call it The Jake.

American Magic's boat is out of the Prada cup, and besides hull repair will need electrical overhaul due to flooding. Going to need a miracle to be competitive next round.

I read the entire article and can safely say I understood about 50% of the words in it. Trying to read sailboat racing talk is like reading another language.
Watching the boats is pretty interesting to me. Is there a way to watch these races in realtime somewhere on American EST timezone? Would be neat to do so. I only ever seem to get highlight videos pushed to me through F-book posts.

The amount of money and resources being thrown at this effort is mind-boggling.
Anyone who's ever had their hand on a tiller knows that it takes a long time to understand the feel of a boat and how it reacts to inputs.
Given that, I can't even wrap my brain around what it will take for these guys to get used to what an insanely high tech machine like this will feel like much less how it will react in such short order.
If you have Hulu check out NBCSN for live feed and on-demand.I still call it The Jake.

The next America's Cup should be contested in Sunfish.
