Dyna ONE or TLT6? Big Steve and Marshal what say you?
Although I have both boots in the closet and have skied the ONE a bunch the thought never occurred to me to make a comparison.
Big Steve and Marshal TGR were the first I saw to bring up the likely comparison. Took me a week to have that AHA moment. One of the reasons TGR is a good place to hang.
A better Comparison maybe? And a good place to start for a franken-boot project for those inclined and wanting to save some money? Likely!
A better comparison now with the current boots available instead of the TLT5 and 6 IMO is the TLT6 and the ONE PF-TX. Just 5.5oz/156g between the two boots, and either $100 or $300. $650 retail for the One PF-TX (but seemingly easy to be had for $550 online) compared to new TLT6 Mtn @ $750 or the P @ $950.
The ONE is a lot more real ski boot than the 5.5 ounce weight gain would appear to be over the TLT Mountain.
It has been gnawing at me for a week or so. I seem to remember Lou over at Wild Snow or one of his members "asking" for a TLT ONE at some point in the recent past. Without a doubt imo that is exactly want the TLT6 is now.
Not sure what the weight is of the third buckle and two added Pbax straps are for the ONE. The liners are off by one ounce. Add the spoiler, bigger power strap and extra sole length, more depth and tread in the heavier sole on the ONE and the grams and then ounces add up quickly.
Performance wise I don't see a huge difference in either boot, except for skinning. There the advantage of a shorter sole and more/easier ROM will help but also easier to go down a shell size in the ONE. And ROM can be added easily enough or loosened up any way. I take a 29 TLT and easily wear a 28 ONE. And a 3mm smaller BSL.
Sometimes it is easier to just ignore the obvious in front of your eyes. As I have clunked around in my TLT6s here at the house sorting out my liner fit I kept having the nagging feeling I was in just another ski boot. My most recent "ski boots" are the ONE and the RS. And now that feeling makes more sense to me. Taking a closer look at the TLT6 and the ONE side by side and looking down at either while they are on your feet and the resemblance is uncanny. Looks to me like Dynafit shot themselves in the foot here.
But anyone doubt how easy it would be to chop 200+ grams off a ONE or Mercury shell and get under the factory TLT6 shell weight and equal or better the skiing/skinning of a TLT 6? More importantly who here is going to do it first?

I've never seen, let alone skied, the TLT6, but:
IME the One skis a bit better, but the TLT5M with tongues and a Booster (brand) strap is in the same league.
On the ski, I'd agree. But as you've noted TLT5 has a big advantage walking, scrambling, kicking steps and cramponing -- and IMV that is due mostly to the ActiFlex, although the shorter sole length helps a bit.
I really like ActiFlex. Others, e.g., Lou D, have deemed it unnecessary. But I think that's a matter of individual physiology. (Lou D also disses on fat waxless skis, but that's just a matter of him being unenlightened. ) I have big calves and am a ball of foot athlete, so a bit of forefoot flex is huge. I run into the same thing with mountaineering boots. Back in the old days I preferred a 3/4 shank mountaineering boot. Modern LMBs perform more like classic full shank boots. After lots of searching I found a modern mountaineering boot with a wee bit of round flex at the toes, much like a classic 3/4 shank MB, and I'm loving them.
So, if the TLT6 performs like the TLT5 w/o ActiFlex, the TLT6 would be too similar to the One for me to justify owning both.
Sad to see Dynafit discontinuing ActiFlex. Hope I can keep my beat-to-shit TLT5Ms going for another couple years.Last edited by Big Steve; 09-23-2013 at 07:09 PM.

+1 for ActiFlex. Haven't skied the TLT6 but have found that the ActiFlex on my TLT5s is great for all the reasons Big Steve listed, and I haven't noticed a major impact on the downhill if the boot is tightened up nicely.

Just molded the TLT6 inner boots tonight. More I play with them, the less I can juistify the TLT6 instead of the ONE.
I am also a huge fan of the Actiflex. It makes an incredible difference in the TLT5 for what I use it for/bought it for, which is steep, technical alpine ice climbing after a ski approach.
I now have the bug to chop up a new pair of Mercury's just to prove my point. Only cash holding me back

I'm thinking of the mercury with a lighter liner and removing a buckle.

I just bought the One U. It was a nobrainer buying this boot for the following reasons:
- it fit
- it was $350
- it is marketed as sitting between the tlt and the merc... which is exactly the type of skiing I plan to do in it.

Do any of these fit differently than the Mercury? I found the forefoot and length was perfect in the 26,5, but the heel/midfoot was way too narrow. The one sounds like an option for me, provided they fit differently.

I have a super narrow foot and thought the midfoot/arch was very uncomfortable in the Mercury/Vulcan until I molded the liners and added an aftermarket footbet. That changed everything. Now it's a super good fit. In comparison, my TLT6P I just got feel great (and much more relaxed in the midfoot) unmolded and out of the box. I also had to size up in the TLT6's. I'm a narrow 10.5 street, 26.5 Vulcan (tight 1 finger fit) and 27.0 (1-1.5 finger fit) in the TLT6.

I found the midfoot on the mercury was too tight so i used the liners from my last pair of AT boots all of last season, seriuosly If you already have boots with an intuition liner try them in the mercury or vulcan shell without molding to give you a better idea if the boot is gona work for you

Thanks guys.
I only had a short test session in a pair of Mercury's, so I see now that I need to get my shit together and try in earnest...
However, the midfoot and heel were tighter than anything I've ever tried before, which simply made me write the whole boot off as impossible for me to fit into. I guess I'll have to start looking around for a cheapish pair now and simply get to work on making it fit.
My foot is a perfect match for the scarpa t1 in a 26,5 if anyone can relate to that. I'd do indecent things to get an alpine boot and touring boot that fit just like it...simen@downskis.com DOWN SKIS

^^^^exactly xxx. My Pwraps that were in my quadrants fit right into my vulcans with zero issues from jump street. Having a few liners that are broken in on the interior are easily adaptable to various shells for me.
