OR. They went to school in the US but could not pass the licensing exams, lost their license, are uninsurable for malpractice, or lost their DEA license. As stated before, most went to school in the US.
Either way, I'm sure that they aren't all bad, but there is a reason that they are working in border towns and not the US.

I believe a majority of mexican dentists had primary training in Mexico - and your "statement" is half truth bandied around on forums. Certainly doesn't apply to other markets in the world like Thailand or Indonesia where i've known a number of people to get competent dentistry (above "backwoods") for far less than they can at home.
if there were "reasons" for fat stupid americans having jobs in America 90% of TGR would be making alot less money than they are

My dentist is Mexican and his degrees are from two different Mexican Universities. He's got them up on the wall and I could write down the names if anybody's interested.
Oh, here's the website: http://dasdentalgroup.com/ddg_013.htm
He doesn't speak English all that well, but it's better than my Spanish. His office manager and the assistant are both fluent English/Spanish speakers and he has the assistant in the room to facilitate communication. I would guess he sees working in a border town as a great opportunity to make money from the gringos like me. It's a win/win.
Hey shredgnar, I lived in Summit Cove last winter, hoping to live in Breck this year because I work over there. Anyway, maybe we can make some turns sometime.Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.

She didn't attend college here in the US, but I find her credentials good enough for my mug.

I could see some American trained dentists being turned off by all the license and insurance bullshit we have here.
My implant was performed at Loma Linda School of Dentristy. The professor Dr Kan did my work and he is highly regarded in the field on implants.
Last I heard he was going back to Japan to teach. He does not need to make a billion dollars. Its not always about the money.

Hello fellow TGR'ers,
After hearing about all the wonderful doctors in Mexico and the good experiences everyone has had there, I would like to kick it up a notch and extend an open invitation to come to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea for your next root canal. The DPRK is the Juche-oriented socialist state which embodies the idea and leadership of Comrade Kim II Sung, the founder of the Republic and the father of socialist Korea. It is also home to world class doctors and dentists who have trained a Pyongyang Medical University, a leading world class medical university.
Some of you may be saying, "Kim Jong-un, I have heard that this University conducts research on biological weapons and even so I will save a lot of money over using a US dentist, would this go against my morals?"
To which I respond, "Your own country also conducts such research in places like Kansas and at Plum Island. And as far as Mexico is concerned, it is the #1 exporter of crystal meth and other illicit drugs to the US."
Ask yourself next time you or one of your family members injects yourself with crystal meth, "Where would I prefer to point my moral compass, South to Mexico, or West to Korea?"
Respectfully,
Kim Jong-un
Supreme Leader of Democratic People's Republic of Korea

I have used Dr Bartell in TJ for a decade. Was just down there last week. He does a better job than my dentist in the states did for a fraction of the cost even flying from Seattle. The money I save I usually stay in Coronado or La Jolla and go surfing and play golf and still come out way ahead. One time my wife's teeth hurt and we went down there prepared to spend $1000 + and they said she wasn't flossing her bridge correctly and ended up cleaning our teeth for $50 and we had a week to go vacation anywhere in So Cal.

I'm learning a little better how it works down there. At my office there is a main dentist and I think he is partner-owners with the office manager. They hire specialists for the various issues like ortho, extractions, etc. The dentist doing my root canal went to general dentistry school, then went on to specialist training and now all he does is root canals all day. He KNOWS roots canals. So that's pretty cool. And he has his 16 year old son there as his assistant, which is so typically Mexican. So shy and cute, no English.
One thing really bothered me when he took an xray to look at his work. He draped the big lead apron over me, but he didn't protect himself or leave the room. I think of that radiation accumulating, and he is SUCH a nice guy. Not smart though and it undermines my confidence to see him ignoring an important protocol like that. Man he even left the kid in the room. I wonder if I should say something.Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.

Sure, lots of people can make rational decisions about getting work down in a border town; but she, along with the rest of us, have to speculate about why US DDS' spend their time there. Only one person here with actual knowledge, albeit anecdotal, of the that side of the coin was the actual dentist. I appreciate that there are people on this board from all backgrounds and I don't cavalierly dismiss their usually more informed opinions as quickly as you. I encourage their participation, you denigrate them for the same reason you accuse grskier of finding reason in EatSlpSki's post - bias.
Back to what is an informative thread.

meanwhile, in that other thread, commonlaw stated that TGR is full of shit when someone with actual experience building things chimed in, because commonlaw's bias is to wrap his lips around someone famouses dick, or someone he can call an "expert" in the land of legal dumbfucks.
If this is what passes for informative, no wonder you are such a fucking retard, and TGR has become such a fucking dump. Because it seems to me the question is how good is expat oriented dentistry - not the general state of Mexican dentistry - and handwaving ancedotes just confirm your bias and the other posters biases (and it's hilarious how you'll shit on IT people, who know shit, but fellate other experts, quelle bias de shitbag).
There's plenty of people I've known who've been medical tourists and were quite happy with the service they received and the price they paid. It may not be perfect, or as high a standard - but it was far better than the alternative they could afford in the US, nothing. It's certainly a growing industry - do you think everyones going to get horrible work done where there teeth fallout? Do you really think medical ore dental care is 10-20 times "better" in the US than elsewhere in the world where the same procedure will cost 5-10% of what it does in the US? To think all of the tourists - or even a majority of them - are getting noticeably horrible service is bizarre. It's certainly probable that Mexican dentistry is to a lower standard - the question is how much lower and how much is that worth. There's little to assertain the former, and regarding the latter it's a whole bunch of spoiled TGR fucks saying it's not worth it (as usually useless)

Dentist here (but seriously, though).
The more involved dental treatment gets, the possibility for shit to go south (no pun intended) starts to increase exponentially. That said, root canals ain't easy and there's a reason its expensive. Hopefully the tooth will be good to go after the root canal is completed.
The big thing with dentistry (and anything where there's a knowledge gap between provider of services and recipient) is that the patient really doesn't know if things were done well or not. You may know if it didn't hurt and if it "looks good," but that really has no indication of the quality of dentistry that was done.
I'm sure there's some great dentists down in TJ. I'm also sure there's some dentists down there doing work that would make many dentists up here cringe. My orders came through. My squadron ships out tomorrow. We're bombing the storage depots at Daiquiri at 1800 hours. We're coming in from the north, below their radar.
