I use eBay to sell mid-grade sports collectibles and its been great. The selling experience has degraded over time, but it's hard to deny the amount of eyes that see the listings. My sales have been lower this past year, but the volume of new listings has been lower, too.

If there is anything out there close to eBay I haven't found it yet. Etsy, Mercari, OfferUp, CL, FB Marketplace all suck from my experience.

It was good back in the day but too much of a good thing and the hammer comes down.

    Pun intended.

what the fuck are you babbling about ignoramus? eBay has been treading water for a decade. With few levers to grow their business they make life shittier for current

I'm selling a couple of bicycle frames on ebay right now. I've bought all manner of junk over the years and I've generally been satisfied. As a seller, I can say the fees are steep, and the paperwork is extensive. When I sold items in the past, my paypal account showed a payment and I shipped. For my current sales, I had to submit a bank account and ss number to ebay for verification, and it looks like they will release funds to me in about 10 days. If there's an upside to this, it feels relatively safe for the seller (me), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned that the buyer might cancel payment once the item is shipped.

For my other item, I have an offer from a guy in the Philippines, but he's asking I send it to a USA address. This seems reasonable as it could be a friend or family, but ebay is definitely not the place it used to be.

The one thing I learned the hard way is to never make an international sale on ebay without using their overseas shipping program. Once the item is delivered to ebay they assume all the risk of delivery in the foreign country.

I'm done as a seller on ebay, getting rid of old junk always turns into a clusterfuck.

The timeline to ship doesn't start until you've been paid. On top of that I set my "handling time" to two days to give me a little extra buffer and typically I have the money deposited by the time I ship.

I've been selling for 20 years and agree that eBay's continued to slide in the wrong direction, but it hasn't got that bad.

I totally agree that dealing with CL or FB for the most part sucks. I have no interest in responding to 30+ FB messages of "Is This Still Available?" and then the lowball offers. Maybe it would be easier to get from tire kicking to purchasing if I lived in a bigger market, but for me Ebay is very easy, detached and straightforward.

that’s why I still use eBay. If you just want something gone, you list it as an auction and a week later you are sending it off. Oddball items you can do a BIN and wait around for the right buyer.

Hate trying to schedule with FB/Craigslist people.

on the other hand I am starting to wonder if running eBay auctions is leaving a lot of value on the table…how many buyers are really out there watching auctions and bidding? Seems everyone wants instant purchase and fast shipping these days so auctions don’t get much attention.

I haven’t sold anything since late last year after multiple failed sales eBay didn’t do anything about, maybe things changed, but my experience was eBay hold time on funds in your account varied by buyer method of payment and location, and the hold was at least a full business day. So buyer pays Tuesday, funds available to request Thursday, in bank account Friday. I guess you could use The immediate payout that wants a bank statement, which, why would I give to eBay?

with eBay international shipping my experience with Canada was eBay made it my problem to find out why the item didn’t make it all the way, which was a pita. Also with sone foreign addresses their idiot system wouldn’t take addresses correctly, so you’d have to change the address, which makes you more liable.

fixed price vs auction depends much on what you are selling to whom, how deep that market is, and how patient you are.

As of Jan 1, 2022, the IRS now requires us to file and send a Form 1099-K to everyone who sells $600 or more.
Since you’ve made $600 or more in sales this year, we’ll need your full 9-digit Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) to send you your 1099-K.
Please update your information so we can start sending your payouts and avoid other account restrictions.

Maybe relevant to this thread: I just made my first ebay purchase in a few years. Why does it show as my very first purchase ever? Even though you can go to my feedback and see that I have made purchases before.
