Kyoto for lunch today w/ Colorando. Great. Really good prices too.

Also went to Stoneground earlier this week, surprisingly good. Weird vibe though, like a hotel bar + outdoor patio + refined sports bar-y dining room

Kyoto was my go-to first date spot back when I was a young, single buck and lived in the neighborhood. Miss that place.

Went to Facil last night, it was excellent. I went earlier this year right after they opened and thought it was pretty good but overhyped, but it felt like they dialed everything in now and its perfect. Drinks are great too.

Tried a couple new places recently:

    Ying's Thai Sushi
9/10. I live just up the street but had always dismissed this place. I stumbled across some good Yelp reviews and decided to try it out. Didn't try the sushi, but the spring rolls, green curry, and thai basil stir fry were excellent. Nice atmosphere inside. Will definitely be back.

    Eight Settlers Distillery
2/10. Corn elote dip and balsalmic brussels were tasty. Fries sucked, baked potato sucked, pork chop was super meh for $37, Cobb salad was fine but underwhelming for $26 or whatever it cost. Very cool atmosphere/decor and maybe some of the other menu items are better, but I'll be hard pressed to go back. All hat, no cattle.

eta: Service at Eight Settlers also sucked. Hard to say if that's systemic or just our particular server.

Just the name of "Ying's Thai sushi " is pretty funny. Chinese guy running a Thai joint in Utah that adds some sushi on the side , maybe next week some Korean BBQ in the back ?

Right? That's why I never gave it a second look before. I can only vouch for the few Thai dishes we tried but I was impressed. FWIW, the yelp reviews generally say that the Thai is better than the sushi.

Nope, have you? That location has churned through so many places over the years I stopped paying attention. I guess I'll have to look into it.

Smokin Bones, that's what you want. It's the best.

I've had barbecue all over the south and across Texas, and Smokin Bones is the best here.

There are a few trucks I've been to but I can't ever remember which ones are good and which ones are meh.

great to hear someone I trust with food posting about that place, we go to TF brewing all the time but that place NEVER seems busy, I've always wondered how they are still in business. I'll put that on my list.

It's only open Thurs-Sat so most of the time it's definitely not going to look busy. I've only been there once about a year ago (I don't make it downtown much) so hopefully the quality hasn't fallen off. The building itself has a great old-school BBQ joint feel. We talked to the owner a bit and he's quite a character. IIRC, he made a bundle in finance in a previous life so the restaurant is basically a retirement hobby without much of a profit motive. He basically just wants to make killer food and chat up happy well-fed customers

I had totally forgotten about that place, used to make a point to take my cars for tire rotations at Big-O when they were open.

What's the top restaurants in mainly South Salt lake and near it? All the recs are scattered over this thread. Affordable food, not fancy shit:

    The Great List
    Fresh Donuts and Deli
    Délice (french)
    Batista (cuban)
    One more Noodle house
    Tosh's Ramen
    Afghan Kitchen
    Pretty Bird
    Villagio Pizza
    Khatmandu II
    Stun Cube
    Saffron Valley

    Also Good List
    Moms Kitchen (taiwanese/Chinese)
    ChikQueen
    Old Cuss Cafe
    Tocos De garay
    Sweet lake
    Grove Market
    Taquira Los Lee

    breweries/ Distilleries
    Shades
    Salt Fire
    level Crossing
    Grid City
    Wasatch/Squatters
    Sugarhouse Distillery
    dented brick Distillery
    beehive Distillery

What am I missing? Maybe the list should expand north and roughly be anything near i15 to 700East -ish.

Pretty good list. Pretty Bird maybe belongs on there, Big Tortas DEFINITELY does. Meet Fresh for Asian style desserts (pair with ChikQueen and One More), and DEFINITELY Old Bridge (excellent, amazing Bosnian food) and Navajo Hogan too.

Big Tortas went out of biz, I was regularly eating your torta rec there before it went under. I updated the list with your other recs, thanks!

I don't get the Grove Market love other than it's a local institution.

We tried sandwiches there and were so disappointed. The only thing they had going for them were huge portions.
