This headline can be switched out for ANY world sporting event the US networks have produced for the last 20 years for middle american audiences. Let's be honest in America "soccer" is like a distant step cousin that the family only wants to see if he brings really nice gifts.

I've found the Telemundo coverage pretty good overall. They've had a whole lot of former player color commentators, but overall they've been good - with a lot of that goodness being the willingness to just stay out of the way of the play by play guy.

That helps my pool chances... especially after I picked Japan to make the final.

I've seen teenagers be more decisive in taking penalty shot than those guys from Spain.

I love it. I'm a tiki taka hater, so i always enjoy when a team that prioritizes possession and ensuring their opponents don't get the ball to get a chance get knocked out because they didn't score. I respect the strategy and respect that it takes skill, but I just hate to watch it. I'd much rather watch Vinicius take on the right back and lose the ball 4/5 times and Brazil have to then track back/recover than Spain cycle the ball indefinitely hoping that their opponent falls asleep.

I was joking that it looked like Morocco was running a 5-5 formation for most of the game. Fuckin' worked, though... and worked on Belgium as well. Good to see Morocco completely fucking up the bracket.

There is no debate about Ronaldo or Messi being the GOAT. Pele won 3 World Cups then kept crushing it in the NASL with the NY Cosmos. GOAT.. end of discussion..

Any talk of Ronaldo or Messi as being better this Pele is absurd.

Pele also brought the bicycle kick to the world. Wasn’t the first to invent it, but is credited with bringing it to the mainstream. Can you imagine seeing that for the first time having never seen a bicycle kick before! 🤯

Might as well start a general Footy/Soccer thread

He also had some incredibly ridiculous record for juggling in listed in the Guinness Book of world Records back when that was the go to almanac for any random shit a 10yr old needed to know

There’s no doubt ayso soccer would not have been anywhere near having success in the 70s with Pele inspiring that gen if kids. US soccer would be farther behind the world than it is by a decade without his presence in the US

The Reyna family is looking pretty crazy right now.

Boy I'll say. So the matriarch decides to blow up their (alleged) friend, USMNT coach, Berhalter's life (and her alleged bestie, his wife's life) by providing US Soccer with details of an incident he had with his wife of 25+ years that happened 30 years ago just because her son didn't act like an adult when he didn't get playing time?

What a bunch of fucking kooks.

“Parents go insane because child doesn’t get enough playing time, take it out on coaching staff” isn’t terribly unusual in US soccer.

I coached youth rec soccer for 12 years. Parents learned pretty quick that any over enthusiastic "suggestions" they had would be met with the opposite action. No pushback after that, but one if anyone got chippy one call to the league folks has any person a coach or official wants removed from the property immediately. We didn't fuck around here. I never had to make that call but once or twice let it be known I had that option.

It was the grandparents going off on the refs 99% of the time.
