Re: The Northman:
Valhalla Rising is far superior...
Heck, The 13th Warrior was better.
There is also an indie horror flick called The Head Hunter, that riffs on the barberian motif much better.
And, while not about Vikings, Centurian is much worthier of a watch, as well.
As for recent films that explored similar themes, The Green Knight did the whole epic quest and hallucinatory/mystical journey much better, imho.

I loved that movie when it was first released and have revisited it a few times and still enjoyed it.
But damn, did it get lambasted by the critics and even Omar Sharif hated it!
Of kinda interest:
The Northman is based on a Danish myth, yet only features one Dane in a leading role. The rest of the cast is a mish-mash of Swedes, Aussies, Brits, Yanks, and Icelanders.
I always thought The 13th Warrior was largely a Norwegian cast, yet it, too, is all over the place ethnically, as well (lottsa Brits and Scots, plus a Spaniard as an Arab Muslim...).
While I think the casting choices in The 13th Warrior were much better than those in The Northman, both could have been better in terms of using actors actually from the places each of the films take place.
But, hey, Hollywood.

HATCHING
This Finnish export takes the changeling mythos and turns it into a coming of age nightmare teeming with fractured fairy tale elements.
While swimming in numerous familiar tropes, it does a solid job of tweaking them just enough to keep you guessing the ultimate outcome.
Additionally, there are interesting layers addressing nature vs nurture, imprinting, and the bond between mother and child, while also touching upon the transformation of a shy adolescent as she turns into a rebellious teen. It also takes the piss out of suburban life, picture perfect families, helicopter moms, and vlogging.
Oh, and there's some pretty decent practical effects and lottsa vomit and slime.

DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS
Sadly, for my taste, there wasn't enough madness or multiversing in this latest Marvel movie.
But that isn't the biggest problem on display here. No, that comes courtesy of the fact that Marvel movies and series have long since become one giant, interconnected inside joke where viewers are expected to be ravenous fanboys/girls where it is necessary to have seen every other movie and series out there in order to understand and appreciate the latest entry.
Guess what? I missed the memo that WandaVision (and to a certain extent Agent Carter and Inhumans) were required viewing prior to seeing this new Doctor Strange movie. The core plot hinges on events and characters from the Disney+ series, so, if like me, you haven't seen it, then portions of this movie will not make sense.
Thankfully my rudimentary comic book knowledge helped me skate through, but I still felt out-of-the-loop for much of the film.
In all honesty, the main reason I ventured to the theater was because director Sam Raimi--yes, he of The Evil Dead notoriety--is at the helm. Sure, much of the movie has that annoying MCU homogeneous look to it, yet every now and then some of his trademarks seep through--erratic crash zooms, extreme Dutch angles, and dizzying arc shots. And of course there are nods to The Three Stooges and The Evil Dead running throughout (yes, I realize my hypocrisy in chastising the interconnected storylines and fanboy callbacks while praising Raimi for his inside jokes).
Despite the momentary bursts of idiosyncratic action and an underlying horror motif, it's still a rather run-of-the-mill Marvel movie teeming with breakneck pacing, tons of explosions, and hyper busy CGI battles, not to mention the requisite cliffhanger ending setting us up for the next sequel.
In the end I was entertained and annoyed in equal measure, left with a desire to revisit the Evil Dead trilogy, and really hungry for pizza (sorry, that last one is an inside joke...).Last edited by dookeyXXX; 05-06-2022 at 10:24 AM.

All the reviews made me think they actually did a great job recreating the comic as I could never get into Dr Strange as it was always a bit to out there & convoluted.
And I was a huge New Mutants guy which was a bit crazy and convoluted..

What little bits of the mystical worlds they show are pretty cool, as is a high speed travel sequence through myriad multiverses, but these elements and moments are rather few and far between.
And I hear ya about the comics, they were a bit over my head and "heavy" when I wad introduced to them. I wasn't terribly fond of the Thor comics, either (I felt they were too "talky").
I was always a bit more into the art than the stories, too. Loved early New Mutants due to Bill Sienkiewicz. And too bad the New Mutants movies was such a chunk of crap...

Some prerequisites (i.e. "required viewing") in regards to better understanding/appreciating Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness:
• WandaVision
• What If... - episodes 1, 4, and 5
• Agent Carter
• Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - season 4
• Runaways - season 3
• A rudimentary knowledge of the Inhumans, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men.
• A rudimentary knowledge of/familiarity with the Evil Dead films.
• A rudimentary familiarity with Doctor Strange's love interests in the comics (essential for understanding the end credit sequence and set-up for the next film).
Also, I am ashamed to admit that I just now realised that the title of the film is an oh-so-obvious riff on H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness...

MEN
I am still not even close to 100% sure what the hell I just watched.
Alex Garland's third feature film is stuffed with lush landscapes and rich earth tones, an immersive score, some amazing sound design, and enough WTF!? moments to keep one enthralled for its 100 minute run time.
But what the f×÷k is it about?
I can't decide if it's saying all women drive men crazy or that all men drive women crazy. And by crazy, I mean into a state of violence and mayhem and emotional disturbance.
There is definitely overt allusions to Adam and Eve, as well as the pagan Green Man.
And I think there is a thread aboit birth, after birth, and re-birth.
At any rate, it's visually and aurally arresting.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK
F×÷King A!!!
And by "A", I mean AWESOME!!!
If you loved the original then there is virtually no way you won't love this sequel.
It's teeming with nostalgic aural and visual callbacks, insane flight, sweaty bodies, all delivered at a breakneck pace
Sure, the characters, are pretty one dimensional (but are instantly likeable) and the plot may be directly lifted from Star Wars: A New Hope, but you don't go see a film like this for rich exposition and intricate character development. No, a film like this is all about the rush.
On that front it delivers and then some.
And say what you will about Tom Cruise, but that man's smirk is infectiously charming.
I cried, I laughed, and I had white knuckles throughout.
There were a few missed opportunities in regards to added nostalgia (where were Viper, Jester, Cougar, Wolfman, Slider, Merlin, Sundown, Hollywood, and Stinger?), but this was a thoroughly satisfying giant tub o' popcorn blockbuster.
Definitely best seen on the biggest screen possible.

Went and saw Montana Story on this rainy Sunday. I really liked this family drama. It did a good job walking the line between being dramatic enough to hold your interest, but not overly dramatic and unbelievable. Really good acting from Owen Teague and, especially, Haley Lu Richardson. Good soundtrack. And it's the extremely rare movie that actually gets the Montana part right, geographically and factually (it's all filmed in Montana). Well done.
From the acclaimed writer/directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel (WHAT MAISIE KNEW, THE DEEP END) comes a neo-Western with an emotional tremor hiding beneath it. Two estranged siblings (Haley Lu Richardson, Owen Teague) return home to the sprawling ranch they once knew and loved, confronting a deep and bitter family legacy against a mythic American backdrop.

Hitting theaters tomorrow.
Most expensive NF movie to date: $200M budget.
Directed by Russo Bros (Avengers: Endgame).
Has been described as “James Bond meets Fast and Furious.”
Wonder if it will make its money back in the week that it’s in theaters (drops on streaming 7/22).

Three book series with similar characters have been made into movies recently.
First was American Assassin, which was terrible.
Second is The Terminal List, I haven’t seen it yet, but it looks promising.
And now this, which looks like has completely missed the feel of the Gray Man books.

I haven’t read any of those books…
That said, as an action film American Assassin was terribly meh.
Critics are slagging The Terminal List, but a few Maggots have said it is decent (https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/...deo-Rec/page38)
And the early reviews on The Gray Man aren’t very encouraging…
• “Another mediocre Netflix mockbuster…” - Forbes
• ”The Gray Man isn’t grueling, just gruel.” - Paste
• “Ryan Gosling Netflix movie an empty game.” - Los Angeles Times
• “Netflix's The Gray Man borrows from a slew of secret agent thrillers, but doesn't match them in quality…” - Nicholas Barber, BBC
SIDE RANT:
Personally, I think the reason NF is losing $$$ isn’t because of shared subscriptions, but more due to the number of mediocre big budget action films they keep throwing money at in the false hopes of creating some great franchise. Examples: The Old Guard, 6 Underground; Extraction, Army of the Dead. Those all had A-list stars, but were bloated, vacuous films. And they largely keep sticking to this formula. I haven’t seen either Red Notice or The Gray Man, but both look as loud and empty as the others mentioned…Last edited by dookeyXXX; 07-14-2022 at 09:41 PM.
