The Unofficial Ongoing Current Movies in Theaters thread

Not still in theaters, but I thought Parasite was outstanding, 5/5. An art film that any adult should be able to enjoy. The metaphors and themes are so over the top, but somehow they don’t feel cheesy or pretentious. I didn’t know a single thing about the movie going into watching it— do that, if you can.

I am more intrigued by the "fake" 1-shot take-style that it was filmed in...
Update: I disagree with the reviewer I talked about earlier. I think that the movie showed some scenes that looked too clean for a war zone, but not sure if that made it picturesque. The long white trench scene specifically. Anyway, I liked it a lot. That said, I didn't sleep well after watching "Saving Private Ryan", (it was a couple nights before a big mt. bike race, but still), and I forgot about this one almost instantly.

I find it a bit hard to believe that Parasite is not playing in a single theater in the Boston area.
It won Best Foreign Film and Best Picture at the Oscars.
It is currently playing at no less than 3 of the 5 chain plexes in Reno and they have been showing the it for the past three weeks in Minden, NV (an hour-and!-half South of Reno...)

But, regardless of how you saw it, it is indeed worth seeing.

Well, this thread is gonna be dead for a spell.
Last of the local cinemas closed yesterday.
No Time To Die set things off when it announced opening day was moved from April to November.
Just heard that Fast 9 and Black Widow have been shelved until further notice.
Curious how many films will be held and eventually released to cinemas later and how many will opt for being released via streaming...

Saw Emma and Invisible Man released straight to streaming. Probably the right call for any non-blockbuster.

I'd be pretty psyched if Netflix bumped up their streaming options in light of the current situation. I'm kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel right now.

A wee bit confused by this as both of those films were playing in at least 3 of the 5 first run theaters this week In Reno (the cineplexes closed after last night)..

"Released straight to streaming" implies that they did not get a theatrical release. Yet both of those films were released theatrically back in February, so they got close to a month on screens.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes films like Wendy, Bloodshot, The Hunt, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire to hit DVD and streaming, since they got wide releases just last week in the theaters.

It will also be interesting to see what other films get shelved to be released later and which ones opt for streaming and DVD...

Just read an article that said both Emma and The Invisible Man, as well as The Hunt are getting an early streaming release this Friday, 3/20, but will run you $19.99 to stream!?!

LA Times piece on which movies have new release dates:

    https://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...lled-postponed

Most of the films included in the article merely say TBD in terms of a new release date. However, F9 has been pushed back a full year to 2021!

Yeah, just heard they were streaming, and didn’t realize they were already released theatrically.

$20 seems steep but cheaper than going to see it in a theater.

Yeah, $20 does seem steep when I think that it costs between $5 and $9 to see a movie in Reno. But when you factor in the gas for the 70 mile r/t to/from the theater it comes out to be pretty close to $20. But then you are getting the theater experience. I dunno if I want to see something so much as to drop $20 to watch it at home...

$20? OK, whatever. I walked to see Emma, so no gas involved. BTW, it was good. I like droll, understated, English humor, and this had a lot of it. Not sure which of the 3 Emmas is the best, though.

Not sure I’d pony up $20 for any of those three, but at $13 a ticket in PDX it is cheaper. Plenty of good stiff for free or cheap rentals to get through first.

Bloodshot going to VOD on 3/24.

$19.99 price tag, which they are saying is going to be the industry standard.

Granted, that gives you a copy of the movie, but I really don't need to own a copy of Bloodshot or The Invisible Man or The Hunt. I just want to watch the film once, for which I'd be willing to pay $4.99 In a pinch...

A $20 price tag pretty much just means they're not going to make any money. The "industry" is once again demonstrating that they really have no clue how people use / want to receive their product.

Emma, The Invisible Man, and The Hunt just popped upon on Prime in the Rent or buy - Trending movies section.
They are labeled "Early Access" and are charging $19.99 for a 48-hour rental. That hefty price tag doesn't even get you a copy of the film, just a 2-day rental!

I thought it was ok. Glad it won BP compared to the typical movies we get now. "Ash is Purist White" is, imo, a much better movie and deserved far more recognition than it got.

The local theater in Tahoe City has turned into a virtual cinema.

Prior to shutting down due to Covid concerns, they primarily showed first run major studio films.
The irony of the situation is that now they are actually screening bonafide arthouse films!

They have some interesting fare coming up:

    Screening 3/27 - 4/2
