I feel like I've probably got time to read the book and then forget what happened before the movie comes out.

    THE FABELMANS
Steven Spielberg’s latest effort is a multi-layered affair. On the surface it’s about filmmaking and the pure love of the escapist aspect of the movies. But it’s also about a dysfunctional family, nostalgia, and most potently, it’s about memories and how, why, and what we choose to remember from the past.
Because of this thematic hodgepodge, it can at times feel disjointed, but then that’s what memories are: disjointed recollections of the past that continue to change over time.
To label this film “heartwarming” might be a slight disservice, but it may make you smile, cry, and feel a broad range of emotions depending on what your family was like growing up and your own personal connection to the movies.

I really enjoyed it. Anya Taylor-Joy is stunning, Fiennes is so good. Visually it was great as well.

Anyone who has ever been in the service industry will relate to parts of it no doubt.

    BABYLON
Imagine Singin’ in the Rain sans musical numbers mashed together with The Artist and Nickelodeon then re-imagined by Quentin Tarantino. Babylon is slightly more batshit bonkers than that.
The opening pre-title sequence bursts out with such gross bravado that it comes close to surpassing the likes of Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, Stand By Me, The Exorcist, and Triangle of Sadness in terms of sheer gag inducing reflex.
On the surface the film is a sprawling love story intermingled with the decline of a matinee idol and the racism endured by actors and musicians of color who are admired as exotic curios instead of talented human beings. The rest of the film peels back the allure of the Silver Screen to reveal the debaucherous underbelly with such unabashed glee and hubris that you often don’t know whether to laugh, cry, scream or squirm.
The film stumbles a bit in the final 10-minutes, as if writer/director Damien Chazelle fell into a refractory coma after prolonging his orgasmic insanity for the previous 2 hours and 59-minutes, but what a joyously demented romp is lavished upon us up until those closing moments.

Read a fairly glowing review of this flick in The Gaurdian.

    https://www.theguardian.com/film/202...-fun-than-bond

Noticed that it’s playing near me on one screen and has been pretty much sold out since it opened this past Friday.
    It looks ridiculous.
I may have to finally bust my theatrical Bollywood cherry and see this on the Big Screen…

    Not yet.

And I have seen a few Bollywood films, a few Tollywood films, and a few Kollywood films, but only on my TV at home, never in a theater…

I was thinking that it couldn’t possibly be worse than F9
(I literally felt brain cells screaming and dying whilst watching that film…)

    INFINITY POOL
Been kinda slow at the cineplex in terms of new releases that pique my interest.
I rallied last week and went to Reno to catch Brandon Cronenberg’s latest cinematic effort.
I am still formulating my take on it, but suffice it to say I don’t feel that it’s worth a trip to the theater to see it.
I was initially hesitant to see the film as the trailer makes it look like a rehash of Riley Stearns sublime Dual. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case.
Instead, Infinity Pool suffers from coming on the tail end of all the 2022 films that skewered the entitled rich set, as well as getting mired in some all-too-familiar tropes.
The sad thing is that it looks great and the cast is fantastic, but the story felt half-baked (or perhaps over baked?).
So far the young Cronenberg is 1 for 3 for me…

    I liked JW
    I really loved JW2
Sadly, I felt underwhelmed by JW3

I am somewhat intrigued by JW4, though parts of it look ridiculous…

    I personally don’t trust Nicole Kidman’s reviews…

I saw Creed III last night on a whim. They were doing an early screening of it and my wife was out of town.

I've seen the first Creed, but not Creed II for reference.

I like this one ok. I think parts of the story were good, and the boxing scenes were well done. I didn't feel like i missed anything from the second one, but maybe there are some nuances I would have caught. The plot though felt really shoehorned in.

    Some maybe mild spoilers below:

The plot centers around Creed's old friend who gets out of jail and wants to start boxing again, so because of [waves hand] reasons ... he gets a championship fight as his first professional fight. I think with about five minutes of critical thought they could have made that part a lot more believable. I only passingly pay attention to fight sports and even I know that would never happen. It almost feels like Jonathan Majors' character is the Creed version of Killmonger. Like it's almost the exact same story.

There're also a few other plot lines that feel just shoved in there that maybe should have been either cut from the movie or wrapped up a little more cleanly.

Overall, though, I enjoyed it, and was entertained throughout.

Went to the cinema today and saw Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (review forthcoming, but I really enjoyed it).

Saw quite a few trailers before the main attraction, most of them for upcoming horror movies, plus Fast X. This, however, was sandwiched in between all of the other ho-hum trailers. I sat upright and was transfixed from the first few seconds. Hadn’t heard of this film at all, but you betcha that I’mma go see it…
