Finally got around to seeing Into the Spider-Verse. It was really good. I am so over the whole super hero genre, and especially all the Spiderman reboots. This one, though, was really well done and a fresh take. They also played sort of tongue-in-cheek with all the other origin stories. Loved the more edgy, hip-hop oriented style, too.

It was actually quite good. I'd recommended it if you are open minded. My GF took me and told me not to watch any previews. Quite engaging and surprisingly relevant.

Christian Bale’s transformation was astonishing, and his performance was great. The story it told was infuriating (for me). RIYL historic political intrigue and/or a great performance by CB.

Watson & Holmes (or vice versa): It's exactly how you think it will be.

Belushi and Ackroyd had Neighbors (rumor is they traded roles at the last minute)
Chevy Chase had Modern Problems
Now Ferrell and Reilly have Holmes and Watson.

I usually love super corny overly done pun garbage. This one is beyond horrible. I recommend ingesting at least half the weed and blow they were on before seeing it if you must see it at all.

Saw it on Christmas Eve when I was in Jr. High with my cousins (we were allowed to go to the movies after the family supper).

Never saw Neighbors and Holmes and Watson looked dumb (to me) from the getgo.

Wifey and I went and saw The Mule yesterday.
We both came out with the same review. Movie was decent, but Dianne Wiest was terrible. They could have just had a PA reading lines from the script and the performance would have been better.

The director's (Karyn Kusama) previous film, The Invitation (same screenwriters, too), was a twisty mindfuck, so I hope this follows suit.

got this on red box so not really in theaters anymore but worth a mention. Very pulp fiction esque and dark. Shot on the nevada cali line, like a smaller version of Cal Neva. great cast, well done

Meh, I liked 'The Favorite.' Actually thought Emma Stone (whom I usually like) was the weak link in the film.

Saw "If Beale St. Could Talk" over the weekend. Holy fuck. I'm not in any way averse to slow, 'arty' movies, but this one near put me to sleep. Two Mehs on a five Meh scale.

Edit to add: I really enjoyed "Roma." But I'm a big fan of Mexico City, so I may be a bit biased.

My research yielded that the El Royale was "inspired" by The Cal Neva and the Lake Tahoe scene in the 1950s and 1960s. The connection to Tahoe ends there.
That was my only complaint with the film: that it was not even shot in Tahoe. That's akin to placing a movie in San Francisco and then shooting it in Vancouver, imho (or placing a film in any other iconic city/locale and then shooting it elsewhere).



The Cal Neva has been sitting in disarray for a number of years now, which is a shame.
When I first moved up here they had pretty decent live music shows in the "Frank Sinatra Ballroom".
It was supposed to re-open in 2014 (https://www.sierrasun.com/news/busin...pen-in-a-year/), but that never happened.

ESCAPE ROOM

Slick and vapid is the best way to describe this horror thriller. Borrowing from a slew of other films/stories ranging from the Saw franchise to Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory to The Most Dangerous Game, The Belkin Experiment, Cube, Final Destination, Hostel, the short-lived TV show Persons Unknown, and Cabin in the Woods (to name but a few), this film has great pacing and some cool production design, but it’s incredibly run-of-the-mill, over-stuffed with one-dimensional, stock characters the audience could care less about, and the end-game is cliched beyond cliched. Not worth seeing on the BIG screen. that’s for sure. Perhaps worth a rental if you are bored and have enough dough to get sufficiently drunk (or high) before you watch it. Oh yeah, the ending unabashedly sets everything up for a sequel and future franchising, which is pretty lame if you ask me.

I watched this on a plane last week. I quite enjoyed it. The soundtrack was entertaining, and Cynthia Erivo's vocals were excellent. One of the few movies I have seem were a character sings on screen, and you actually believe it. Her performance along with a surprising role by Thor were the best parts of the movie.


But I have a bias towards soul music and old r&b.

I saw Glass tonight with the wifey. If you liked Unbreakable and Split then you’ll probably like it. The story was good and the ending was a bit unexpected.

I thought they spent a bit too much time on the character from Split and not enough time on Samuel L and Bruce Willis, but overall worth the $5.50 for a Tuesday ticket.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

The hype surrounding this film is not mere hyperbole, that's for sure.
I have been putting off seeing this film because it has been oogled and ahhhed about practically non-stop and I was afraid it was due to fanboy overload.
But at a certain point when the praise I kept hearing was coming unamimously from my professional (i.e. paid) critic friends, my friends with kids, my friends without kids, my friends who are just plain comic book nerds, and my friends who could give less than two shits about comic books, it finally made me perk up and think "perhaps there is something to all the hullabaloo."
This film is straight bonkers from the get-go.
A veritable whirlwind of eye candy and pure comic book bravado, it succeeds due to whip-quick pacing, a solid sense of humor (much of it derived from Harold Lloyd silent films and classic Looney Tunes), some great meta-moments, and some of the most bristling action sequences ever put to screen.
It also pays homage to just about every incarnation/era of Spider-Man imaginable.
I would have given it a full 5 out of 5, but the animators/directors opted for this blurry background look that was not only annoying, but incredibly distracting. I read an article saying that they were going for the blurred, pastel-tinged watercolor look of traditional anime, so I understand what they were aiming for, but frankly they missed the boat and I found myself thinking that the theater might have been showing the 3-D version but forgot to supply me with the glasses...
Other than feeling like my eyes were out of focus 50% of the time, the film crackles with verve and a keen sense of how to actually translate the often goofy elements of comic books to the cinema.
All of the voice actors are awesome, too, and there's a couple of surprises in that regard, as well (the Noir Spider-Man is hilarious)
This film is the complete antithesis to Venom, that's for sure!
If you dig superhero films, this is easily one of the best to hit the Silver Screen in quite some time and puts most of the live-action ones to shame.

So true! I was well medicated and it didn’t disappoint.

What I thought was really amazing was how cinematic some of the shots felt, which I have never really seen in an animated movie.
