I had a base-level Pugsley for a while but sold it. It was fun, but the thing was so goddamned heavy that I almost always took my normal mtb out during the summer. I thought I'd be all stoked on winter riding, but realized that I'd rather go skiing if I'm going to bother screwing around with taking equipment somewhere to go have fun in the snow.

If you do it, build it light or it's not worth it. IMO.

We need a good single crown squish fork first or even a fully frame.

even with a carbon frame won't those things still be heavy? The wheels & tires won't get any lighter, suspension won't make them lighter either.

With Fattys its not so much about the weight you can loose. Its what you do with the weight you have. My rigid Pugs, with a Thud Buster, is around 38ish lbs and it rides stuff my converted Stumpy can not.

I do admit to holey rolling darryl wheels.

28# Beargrease is more fun than my 27# full xt trance. Anyone wanna buy a small trance before I start harvesting parts off it for the fatty?

Fatty love all depends on what you are trying to get out of a ride. If you have a need to be the fastest guy on the trail, forget the fatty unless you ride in sand or snow. If you can have fun at any speed, a fatty will be the most fun. My biggest issue with my ~40# bike has been on uncleared trails where I'm lifting the pig over downed trees. That will give you an upper body workout.

Agree with crastest - I'm not trying to win any races. I'm just out there to ENJOY the ride, and enjoy the bike. Fatties make both parts pretty easy to achieve.

I have seen a number of fatties that have been tricked out to get them significantly under 30#, which is quite respectable. I'm sure my Fatback is probably getting close, and I'm toying with taking it to 1x9, so we'll see. My biggest weight savings I WON'T take advantage of are tires - I don't want the ultra-lights, as the areas I ride are pretty thorny/sticky/poke-y, and guys with lighter tires flat a lot more than I do. I'll stick to the heavier, thicker-walled 27 tpi tires.

can you run fat tires tubless? or are the pressures too low to keep tire on rim?

    ^^^yes, you can.

i was just talking to a guy (riding 100 mile epic) on a fatty he had converted to tubeless on Holey Rolling Darryl Rims. He used Gorilla Tape for the rim tape.

There are no tubeless specific rims that I'm aware of, so it's like any homebrew system. There's those that love it and have no problems, and then there are the ones that can't get it to work no matter what. I run tubes in my BFL's or Bud n Lou's (4.7 & 4.8" wide) and I can run pressures as low as 4 psi. I've had 1 pinch flat in 2 or 3 hundred miles.

I have not gone tubless but some folks who have are using rim glue to keep the tires from sliding which is an issue due to the gobs of torque and lower psi.
