I also love REAL country music.
There's never been a better country song (or just "song") than this:
if I posted that before, so what, listen to it again

These days, you can't do much better than Alan Jackson's voice...
[
...but really you gotta go back. If you don't know Jimmie Rodgers you don't know shit:
"I'ma buy me a pistol long as I am tall,
I'm gonna shoot poor thelma,
Just to see her jump and fall"
Now that's country.
Now, is Bluegrass country? Dunno. And is this bluegrass even? Dunno (of course the Stanleys were Bluegrass but this song? harder to say). But way up top of the ice library? Yup.
But. really, when you get down to it, George:

Wasn't going to go through the whole thread. I assume Hank Williams III has been mentioned but this whole album is pretty awesome.

Bluegrass is country. I always love it when some hipster says they hate country but like bluegrass.

I don't care for Bluegrass but I listen to a ton of country music. There is a ton a good suggestions, I guess it really comes down to what do you like. There are as many types of country as there are rock and roll.

Picked up Hank's new album on Tuesday. Not as strong as his previous offerings overall, but I'm expecting it to grow on me. More of an old school country album. I'd still buy it if it was crap because I'm a huge Hank 3 fan and I will do whatever I can to support him.
New album means new tour cycle and I'm pumped to see him live again!

Check out Corb Lund. Canadian group. Check out some of their newer stuff too.
Trampled by Turtles... probably heard this one
Ween: You either tolerate them or hate them. They aren't a country band but they put out a country album... and you know what... It's not all that bad.
Deep Dark Woods... Another Canadian group. More like Alt-Country. Looking at their bearded plaidness and silly hats ruins it for me, so I usually dont watch the videos while I listen.

Another vote for Corb Lund.
And Tim Hus is some good Alberta country.Flying the Bluehouse colors in Western Canada! Let me know if you want some rad skis!!
"He is god of snow; the one called Ullr. Son of Sif, step son of Thor. He is so fierce a bowman and ski-runner that none may contend! He is quite beautiful to look upon and has all the characteristics of a warrior. It is wise to invoke the name of Ullr in duels!"

+1 on Wayne "The Train" Hancock. Check out Whiskeytown and some of Ryan Adams solo stuff and with the Cardinals. That's RYAN and not BRYAN. Some of Mike Ness's solo stuff is countryish too.

Good stuff here. Hayes Carll kicked off Saturday at Targhee Bluegrass this summer with: we're not any bit of bluegrass, but here ya go. Crushed it!!

Bumping this thread because it deserves to be bumped... so many great suggestions here that I've enjoyed over the past two years.
I was listening to Townes Van Zandt earlier tonight, which made me think of it as it was this thread that turned me on to him. Probably the best songwriter I've ever heard- listening to his music helped me through a rough patch a few years back. Anyone who doesn't already own it should read a bit about Townes' life, then go out and buy "Live at the Old Quarter" immediately.

+1 on Sturgill Simpson
If you like Robert Earle Keen check out Roger Creager
No mention of Old Crow Medicine Show
For AKUS I like the any of the live albums. The Boy Who Couldn't Hoe Corn is an all time favorite song from them.
