I am a nice hole when it comes to four way stops and tractor/trailers making left turns. I will sit way back and let the car or two in front of me go so the semi making a left into my lane has some clearance.

Driving on a residential road in College Place (i.e. very small town with no traffic) speed limit is 25 mph (school zone with those electronic speed signs)

One car in front of me. No one behind. One truck in the opposite lane of travel stopped with turn signal on waiting for us to pass.

Nicehole in front of me stops to let the truck turn infront of them. This was mid-block. After the two of us there were no other cars.

People think they’re being courteous but often they are just creating uncertainty and chaos. Just follow the rules of the road so we all know what the hell is going on.

If you ever visit rural Japan, don't drive or you'll lose your mind. Every intersection, every stop sign, this is always the case. Everyone just waving you to go first even though they have the right-of-way just so they can receive a thank you bow.

Or-- conversely, they'll just assume you're going to give up your right-of-way and they'll simply pull in front of you. I experience this daily and assume everyone waiting at the stop sign is going to run it and pull out in front of me.

I live in Yamagata. And people who visit from around the country all say the same thing: "People in Yamagata are really friendly until they get into their cars. Then they become these passive-aggressive assholes."

Even my kids in the back seat can be heard: "Yamagata drivers."

I was warned when I moved here: "Don't get a car. You'll lose your shit."

    /rant-over. /sorry.

This is a daily occurrence in my town. Drives me crazy. Just follow the traffic rules and everyone will get where they are going without having to guess what is going through the nicehole's head.

The best thing that ever happened in Truckee is when they replaced the 4 way stop sign 10 total lane Donner Lake intersection with a one lane roundabout. You still have to wonder if you're going to get T-boned by the guy who thinks he has room to enter but doesn't, but it beats a bunch of cars stalled at the intersection trying to figure out whose turn it is.

    Niceholes

We have a busy two-way stop at a highway x’ing here. Vehicles arrive at the stop sign at the same time, one taking a left-hand turn yields to the vehicle going straight. ‘Straight forward’ rule you would think. 50/50 chance of encountering a nicehole trying to wave you on when they have the right-of-way. Bad intersection as well as the community street hits the intersection at bit of an angle obscuring the view and the highway traffic isn’t always going the speed limit (60kph). I will wait for the nicehole to get frustrated and go instead of taking their courtesy. Their eyes bug out when I enter the intersection as soon as their bumper passes their stop sign.

The other main highway crossing in town they replaced with a roundabout. Much better, but I still look both ways before entering. I see some befuddled tourist going the wrong way through it a couple times a year.

    Niceholes

    Fucking Seattle man.

I’ve lived and commuted in all of the west coast major metros… Seattle has by far the largest nicehole population (atleast over here…)

    - Let’s slam on the brakes to yield to this guy trying to jaywalk

    - Let’s just sit behind the stop line at an unprotected left and not slide up into the turn pocket. Oh, you missed the light, let’s just do the same thing the next light cycle, I wonder if the results will be any different….

    - You got in fender benders huh - let’s just park in the middle of the fucking road to exchange insurance information… that seems like the correct course of action…

    - Zipper merge - what zipper merge….

    - 40mph speed limit. Cool, 30 is less than 40 so we’re cool huh…

Edit - Honking. No one fucking honks here and that is a main part of the problem. These fucks need to know they fucked up. How are they going to change if they don’t know they need to change. I honk at these fucks all the time and just get glassy eyes in return….

This is the thing people dont understand. Speed isnt all that dangerous. neither is aggressive driving or a countless other "bad" driving habits. What is dangerous is unpredictability. If you are the only car going 20mph over the speed limit, your speed is unpredictable to other drivers. If you stop mid block to let someone turn or cross, that is unpredictable. If you cut someone off, or go when its not your turn, etc its all a problem if the other person doesnt expect it to happen. Thats why if you take a big east coast city driving mentality to the seattle suburbs, bad things will happen, and vice versa. A safe driver is a driver that does what everyone else around them does, consistently (within reason).

Buncha years ago the local Sheriff's department put an op Ed in the local paper telling people that it was illegal to give up your right of way and to basically stop being niceholes.

I honk. Frequently due to behaviors below and I'll add...

Fucking cyclists (I know there's a thread) who ride on the busy two lane curvy road literally 10 feet from the Burke-Gilman bike trail which has no one on it. Fuck you.

And let's not forget the dude in the long line at a light you can see watching YouTube on his phone to notice the light's changed. Fuck you too.
