Jesus fuck, ya'all're like a Faux News reader pouncing on a single word. "Hotness" is about as subjective as it gets.
But I particularly find intelligent, ambitious women hot, so go figure. Now you can pick certain global regions and say "women from here or there are hot". Well the smart ambitious women from that region come to DC, and some of them are pretty damn hot.
If you can't find a woman who you think is attractive there, you are Doing it Wrong.

There was a smokin' hot escort who had a yellow 993 cabrio. Didn't make enough for her
Smart and ambitious is fine. It's the direction it takes in DC that sucks. A bastardized cross of the vapid superficiality of LA, the avariciousness of New York and the snobby neredery of the Ivy League with a liberal salting of coattail riding. Which also fits the city itself. There's no there there. Never really was, it was a backwater, then a crime ridden ghetto because all the white folk moved to the burbs, now there's a Starbucks and a sushi place on ever block and whatever little culture there was was paved under for a mixed use condodevelopment and an anchor WholeFoods/TraderJoes/Wegmans

^^ Jesus dude. You're either hanging out in the wrong parts of the city, or are such an insufferable douche you couldn't find any friends.
Every city has its share of assholes, you just have to figure out how to find the cool places. If you go to happy hour near the hill you'll of course find the worst of the worst

I avoided the Hill and Georgetown like the plague. The froot loop/Mt. Pleasant/Madams-Organ was the place to be. On bike, I never noticed the sprawl and on weekends, buy the time I rented a car, rush hour was pretty much over. Coming in late Sunday night was like shit through a goose.
I grew up out side of NYC, spent several summers in Boston, and have visited many cities. DC is pretty damn livable, all things considered.

If I were truly an insufferable douche I'd fit in perfectly. Yes, there's some nice people. It offers a bastardized urban living experience if that's your thing. There's dozens of cities in the Western US that are more livable than DC, particularly if you like the out of doors. I wouldn't call it awesome.
But if your goal is 2 years to further your career, you'll fit in.
Climbing - Carderock/GreatFalls (afterwork only), couple crappy climbing gyms, Old Rag (oldschool Granite), longish drives to Seneca/NewRiver Gorge/Gunks
Paddling - I guess its there
Skiing - get on a plane
Sailing - Annapolis

Hugh, please. Some of us have to live in certain places to either work or go to school. To be stuck in DC for a few years for that purpose isn't that fucking bad, and, you can certainly have a good fucking time there with little fucking effort. It's not the coolest I 95 city, but, it ain't bad at all. Christ, if you have half a brain and are one who partakes in what cultural institutions have to offer a lot, it may be number one, because all of that shit there is free, paid for by the taxpayer. And, every time I'm there, my neck and eyes are tired from the female scenery all around. I play a game in my mind and try to figure the country and what daddy does.
Don't be an ass.
Where do you live, btw, and, why?

Regarding women, I did mention that I live in a small ski town in Colorado, right? So basically, the women anywhere will be better than where I am now.
Anyway, an east coast location also puts me closer to family in the Carolinas, so that would be a big plus too. The other idea right now is to go to Fort Collins- CSU. Or stay here, remain broke, and attend more classes at wasted state.

Benny Barista, I lived there and worked there, didn't parachute into a posh condo a couple weekends a year to get stoned and wander around museums. Sure, everythings what you make of it, there's good people everywhere, yada yada. If you like the outdoors it's a shitty city. The exception possibly being Whitewater Paddling. As city's go my experience was it's a pretty crappy one to be broke in - because all of those politico/consultant/governmentleaches bring in the coin and spend it. YMMV.
yeah, you'll look at a ski town 6 as a girl who likes to ski. which might be more interesting longterm than someone who's interested in a 5 up 4 down colonial with the complete Ethan Allan home collection.
dunno what the fuck OP wants to do, nor do I really care. but there's a massive gulf between ski town, Ft. Collins (which is still proximal to fun) and where outdoor dreams die DC. If you want to knuckle down and "progress your career" it's the choice.

Dildo and Brain love DC. Why am I not surprised?
DC = Douche Capital.

I live about 35 minutes west of DC. If I were single and a 30-somthing, there are definitely worse places to spend 2 years of life. The girl to guy ratio in DC is WAY different that in small ski towns. Lots of fun clubs and stuff to do. I say go for it!
Of all the muthafuckas on earth, you the muthafuckest.

I had no idea I live in such a hellhole.
Excepting the very notable lack of outdoor recreation other than bouldering in Carderock or paddling the Potomac around Great Falls this place is easily the best US city I've spent time in. Great food, fun neighborhoods, everything is close, great public transportation, and many many many hot women... unless you like the inflated Bimbo type like STFU.
Don't listen to Hugh - he's a jaded NoVa escapee, and even that area has improved, especially the Wilson Blvd. corridor. Too far away from AU, tho - stay within the District and you'll be fine. If you're going to AU (main campus?) I'd live in Cleveland Park if you can find something affordable. It's considered one of the "safest" neighborhoods so crawling with single women between 25 and 35. Good inexpensive restaurants (expensive ones too) and some fun bars/pool halls. Metro is right there and will take you anywhere you want to go, including the airport -- DCA now and soon IAD.
It's a very green city with tons of parks, trees, etc. No buildings taller than 14 floors by code, so no urban canyon feeling. Good music scene too.
Summer and Winter suck for the reasons already stated. Spring and especially Fall are awesome weather-wise. Crime is the lowest it's ever been. More and more bike lanes are being installed on the roads. Rock Creek Park is an awesome oasis in the middle of the city, and a short walk/ride downhill from Cleveland Park. No MTB trails, however, since it's a NPS park.

Other than that Ms. Lincoln how was the play? Yeah, sorry, forgot that Old Town Alex doesn't measure up to the "charms" of the "real" city.... it's just walkable and quasi-charming but only 5 starbucks and Paneras.
By "soon" to Dulles Tipp means 2018... so with any luck by the time OPs up and gone (improvements in DC- other than urban gentrification - take decades). Even by the slow and shitty standards of US public works DCs special.
I'd take an city in the western US (even Spokane) before DC. And most city's on the East Coast. But I'm jaded and not married with kids.

The whole DC move is still contingent upon actually getting accepted. I'm thinking this is the program I want to do though.
At the moment, options are something like CSU/Ft. Collins, American/DC, move to Denver/Boulder, SLC, stay put where I am, or maybe apply to a different program.
I'm pretty burnt out on ski town life and endless winters, so while I will probably miss it some, I am ready to get the fuck out of dodge for a while.

If its two years I'd go to the best grad school you can for what you want to do. If American is that, DC is a good place to live.
You'll find rewarding things in every city if you go in with the intention of making the best of it, and changing your expectations from a CO ski town. Two years of some of the best ethnic food you'll ever eat, two years of exploring the surrounding area(Chesapeake Bay, Shennandoah), and a vibrant young city w a great music scene.
Cons are its expensive, hot and humid, and the skiing is bad.
Pros are biking options outside of town(mountain) and lots of ways to escape the city by road bike. Also food, music, and interesting people from all over the world.

Biking, especially mountain biking, trumps skiing at this point in my life. So I'm glad to hear that there is some there. I was thinking if I went I'd have to sell my MTB and get a roadie.
