Looking at a setup for Hogs. Haven't gotten much past the research phase. There is a shop about an hour away that will let you try any bow in his shop. He has his own range, and he will work with you to find what you need. His main interest is getting you the right setup.

I will probably get serious this coming fall. Hog season is year long here, it is just too freaking hot in the summer.

I have a 20 year old Martin Firecat set to a 75lb draw weight. It has all the modern attachments like stabilizers and fiber optic sights. I killed a cow elk and a small buck with it back when the bow was new. I have fallen out of bowhunting and archery in general, until recently. I just bought an old Pearson recurve on ebay and am thinking of doing more traditional shooting.

Elk with a bow is just crazy fun. Here is one I took a couple years ago. Had a few chances last year just couldn't seal the deal, fuckin N. Idaho brush!

Some of these pictures have been posted in other threads, but I want to share here and love elk archery. I am already getting excited to start scouting the old hunting grounds for this coming season.

Buddies dad shot this one two seasons ago (disclaimer - it was with a muzzleloader):

    My oldman's first Elk hunt:

He missed a very nice 6x6 at 40 yrds. We bought him a new bow last Christmas and he is coming out again this year...going to do everything I can to get him another shot.

Hmm- I live in Clearwater. I'll keep an eye out for Rachel. Lots of that down here. Super hot with a hint of redneck.
Best is when you see a chick wearing almost nothing, reeling in a huge Tarpon. There is no better sight.

I shoot a bunch every summer leading up to bow season, but it's been a few years since I've actually hunted with a bow. I'll have to change that this year.

Currently have a PSE Thunderbolt w/ Whisker Biscuit and standard 4 pin sight. Shooting a Muzzy 90 4 blade.

I've hunted whitetail for 10 years back on the East Coast. This was my first season going after elk in CO. Had a few cracks at some nice muleys, but didn't have a tag. I was bored with whitetail hunting on 20 acres hardwoods patches, but getting after elk in 100K acre wilderness areas is more my style and really got me fired up about the sport again.

What is your draw weight and what arrow are you shooting? How long, and weight per inch? You are probably going to need to reconsider things switching to elk. If you search the web there are some good guidelines on it. I would go to a heavier arrow, 100 grain tip and maybe start shooting more and see if you can comfortable with a couple more pounds in draw weight.

While you are at it...there are alot of well priced drop away's out there...I like the Ripcord myself.

Just a couple suggestions from someone who was also new to elk hunting at one point.

Thanks for the feedback Gretch. Appreciate the pointers.

Draw is 65 pounds. Shooting 29" Gold Tip Expedition 7595s, 8.9 WPI. After shooting aluminum for years, finally switched to carbon. Good change.

No chance I'm switching to a drop away, I love the Biscuits. No issue whatsoever with accuracy. You can't beat them for stalking in thick brush or when you need to move quickly.

Very much looking forward to chasing tail again this fall. Had a close ones last year but never set an arrow loose. It is very addicting, though, and should be handled with care, just like any other potentially life-encompassing outdoor hobby!

up here bow hunting season is WAY longer than the firearm season but then you have to learn how to shoot a bow which is more sporting harder to do

So a couple of buddies bought crossbows which come under the same hunting regs as a bow but they are easier to shoot & more accurate ... they both got moose within 6 months of becoming " bow hunters "
