The Norwegain Touring and Summer Skiing Stoke Thread 2013
So, with the touring season kicking off, I had planned to post some stoke from this easter, but then I found this and it's way better than anything I have laying around. I guess it will make a good intro to what hopefully will become a great thread
That being said; maybe I'll find something worthy on my harddrive one of these days. For the rest of the norwegian mags; stoke and TRs appreciated.

Oh well....
Last year, late May; opening weekend Stryn Sommerski. First days on skis since tearing my MCL last easter. Ok snow, excellent weather, great days.
And yes, the pictures are VGA
On the way there, a lot of climax avalanches
Lots of people on opening day...
...even though the they had some issues with the lifts
Got some skiing done anyhow
Random people hanging out at the bottom of Lange Baksiden; waiting for a ride
And finally, a couple of views from the valley below

Pretty much, only getting better from now on.
You should, but I wouldn't decide before seeing how the conditions work out, usually you'll have a pretty good idea by mid january. This year has not been that good, at least not in the south. The spring season is usually good anyhow, this year I think the north has the best coverage.

Anyone wanna tour around Tromso & Lyngen any days 14 May through 18 May?
I'm staying at Magic Mountain Lodge (I think) 15 May through 18 May._______________________________________________

Wish I would have had a chance to ski in Jotunheimen when I was there a few years ago (massive heath wave, tons of slides, went biking instead).
My friend is currently touring in the Lyngen Alps, his photos are amazing. The trumpet scatters its awful sound Over the graves of all lands Summoning all before the throne

I'm trying to go to Norway this summer, probably beginning of July. It's not a skiing trip, but of course I'm not going to pass up decent skiing if it's available.
Is Stryn Sommerski the best option, and is it worth going to for a day in early July? Furthermore, are their rentals decent enough that I'm not going to kill myself. And finally, and this is a longshot, but is there public transportation to any of the ski areas? I'll probably be trying to get around without a car.

1. Stryn is planning to stay open until 14.july. Don't know if the snow will last, not as much snow this year as usual. Other options; Juvass Sommerskisenter and Folgefonna Skisenter. Both are a bit more park oriented. Never been there though. PM me and I'll check the conditions.
2. Rentals are usually ok. I think they have Volkls in Stryn.
3. Yes and no. Buses primarily, might have to link up with some locals the last few kilometers.

The summer season is almost over before it even has begun, but I finally got out to Hurrungane last weekend, to ski Store Ringstind, and hopefully a few couloirs. Great area, but crappy snow already. Very wet glop on top, weak layers further down, lots of nasty activity on north slopes, skiing on glue on south slopes.
The SW-part of Hurrungane, our route in purple
The trip started out in dense fog, hoping that the forecasts would come true
After a while Dyrhaugsryggen started to appear to the north....
Lauvnostind appeared to the south....
And soon we could see the north couloir of Soleibotntind (marked in red)...
And the steep snowfield leading into it.
Further ahead, on the glacier between Midtre and Store Ringstind, the weather starting to clear. Stølsmaradalstinden in the background.
As we headed up the glacier, a guided group had crossed the glacier behind us. Midtre Ringstind on the other side of the glacier.
Towards the top, the lightning was spectacular. Too bad my skills with a camera wasn't on par.
Finally on the top. Peeking over the cornice towards the southwest and Austbotntindane. The obvious couloir lookers right (marked in green) was our objective for the next day. Never happened though.
Meanwhile.....down on the glacier. Someone had lost his ski while trying to skin up a 40' icy slope. Smart choice. The guy on the ridge in the background is looking for it. It went over the cornice. Oh well.
This one is not mine, but it shows Dyrhaugstinden on the other side of the glacier, with another great line towards the glacier. Marked in blue. Store Skagastølstind, Norways 3rd highest further back.
M getting ready to ski, Stølsmaradalstinden looking good behind him.
And we're off
Down on the glacier once again, Store Ringstind above us
That evening we had a few beers and the next day the weather was crappy, so we stayed close to the campsite. The weather cleared for 30 minutes, giving us a view of Steindalsnosi to the north

Good snow up high in Lyngen, but lots of wet slide activity during the day. We even got a whoomphing collapse on Thursday at around 500m elevation. It's not refreezing down low and some of the approaches are getting really shitty.
But, here is some sweet stoke from Lyngen! (Daltinden near Jiehkevarri)

Vakkert.. Er en grunn til at jeg blir værende i hjemlandet..
There's a reason I only stayed one season in Austria..
Sure the alps are great. But honestly. There's no place like home.
I love our winters. Even though this one's been brutal with regards to avvys..

2018 Norway Snowpack?
Hey All,
Planning to make a third consecutive trip back to Norway. This time for skiing rather than climbing. Looking at mid May. Sounds like a lot of options that time, but I'm wondering if anyone can weigh in on current year snowpack? Any areas get hit significantly harder than others?
Searched all over, even in Norwegian, but no real indicators.
Thanks in advance for any info you might have.

I don't know about tons of options in May. I was there last year in mid April and things were starting to get thinner closer to sea level. I'm sure you'll find skiing however you may have to hike a bit from road to snowline.

Southern half of the country had a huge winter. You'll be fine in May.

Thanks
Thanks for the input. Heard similar things from a Norwegian forum. No worries hiking a bit.
I was mainly trying to determine if a flight up to Tromso made sense, but it sounds like plenty of the snow stayed south. Sounds like they had an epic year just like here in the Alps. Too bad it didn't work that way for Colorado this year.
Happy turns.

Probably a good year to check Sunnmøre or Jotunheimen etc with a big snowpack and save Tromsø etc for a different year, in my opinion.
