Shasta solo via Hotlum/Wintun on 5/29, from the Brewer Ck., trailhead. Road in in good shape for passenger vehicles. 5 or 6 vehicles at the trailhead, although only saw a single pair of skiers the entire day so seemed kind of empty compared to past Memorial Day weekends. Dry hiking to treeline/8,500 ft. Gnarly sun-cups and dirty snow to about 9,000. Above 9k the bigger sun-cups easily avoided to permit skinning while skirting horizontal ribs of bulging blue ice exposed in the middle of the Hotlum [never saw that before] to about 11K where a heel lifter on one my of dyafiddles blew apart so changed over to crampons a little earlier than in the past. With the exception of the first 10 yards, the cross-over to the Wintun at 12,200 was all rock. On the Wintun smallish sun-cups up to the top of the ship's prow, and then more gnarly sun-cups and exposed bulges of blue ice to the top. However, the edges on either side of the blue ice was relatively smooth. Descended the Wintun to about 10,500, and at 2:30 p.m., able to find smooth corn on the skier's left before crossing back to the Hotlum without taking the skis off, and down to 8K on a long strip of snow before cutting hard left to find the trail before entering the woods back to the trailhead.

Thanks for the update, Dark E! Good work - everybody I know was scared off of Shasta by the horrific conditions reports.

Did our annual Mem Day trip to Lassen with a huge crew - 13 campsites! The dads popped out for a ski of Lassen on Sunday. Tennis shoes up the south face trail from the summit lot to the Peak. Dropped at 9:15 am - excellent corn. About 2k of quality skiing, and another 800-1000 of not-quality skiing. 30 min walk to Dev Area lot. Looks like it will be good for another week or two...except that it was 85* when I left the park on Monday afternoon...

I'm here at the base of the mountain. Camper is packed and we're headed out. Fire jumped Diller Canyon and new fire line at Cascade Gulch. Flames visible from town with massive plume. I drove home yesterday from MX just before the new Salt Fire start near Shasta Lake. Along with the Tenant Fire, Nor Cal is not looking good. Barely made it home in time to repack and evacuate. Last night we had good news with solid efforts by the firefighters but I'm not trusting anything with how hot and dry this is.

If there is any silver lining to this, with all the dozer lines being constructed, mountain access will be greatly enhanced after years of neglect. Imagine 2 lane graded road to the base of Diller Canyon...Otherwise this shit is real here like many other places in the west

damn. looks like the fire is plowing through outdoor grow operations. Zooming in on the area it looks like every home has a fenced grow in the back yard with roughly 99 plants. bright side is if it was kept away from the whitney creek neighborhood (as it looks on the inciweb map) that was roughly 10,000 plants saved. maybe some will have retardant on it for a special buzz. but seriously that's a lot of money for the area

Last night my old man said the cops went to one guy's house to enforce the mandatory evac order, he told them he was staying to protect his grow, they said he had to leave, he pulled a gun, cops shot him and he died on-scene.

Wasn't quite like that. He was trying to enter the subdivision and they wouldn't let him through and he pulled a gun. They're claiming he may have gotten some rounds off but that sounds suspect.

Ouch, Washington Post today: Mount Shasta is nearly snowless, a rare event that is helping melt the mountainís glaciers

Lee what was the overall outcome for the Lava Fire? Inciweb suggests most of the really bad outcomes were avoided. Hope so. https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7581/

Was driving through town on my way to Red Bluff, and it was heart breaking to see the mountain so dry and flames on its lower flanks.

The official start to the '21-'22 season. This storm was perfect, snow levels up to 10,000 before cooling off as the front pushed through. 2-3 feet of dense snow topped with a little fairy dust to make it fun. Still shallow and not enough base to ski the trees but the alpine above 8,500' is skiing good. Today was supposed to bring a little more moisture before clearing out. Either way, after the last year, this looks amazing. More snow above 10,000' than all of last season.

October was over 500% of normal. So far November is seeing consistent precipitation.
Storm finished yesterday with another tonight. Warm storms so nothing below tree line yet but exactly the spackle we need. Liking the start to 22

Sure looks like the Ski Park has cut a new lift line on Gray Butte.

Saturday, 12/4/21, travel was from Bunny Flats to about 12K in Avalanche Gulch. Sunny but windy with big gusts kept it a chattering and icy challenge at 2:00 p.m., with golf ball to softball size ice balls whizzing down the slope. Similar experience to Jibmaster's video ^^^ and account of where skinnable snow is available.
